Author Topic: Laptop randomly shuts off  (Read 1639 times)

Could you download SpeedFan and check the numbers every couple of minutes?

My laptop is in a weird state right now. The hinges have started to pull the top and bottom shells off of the laptop, which has allowed heavy amounts of dust in, which causes significantly more heat. Meanwhile, the pin for the power plug (which is required since the battery is completely dead right now) is a little bit wobbly, which is caused by a micro-fracture. Whenever the laptop overheats, the micro-fracture becomes much larger, and the power plug no longer functions, and the laptop shuts down.

You might have a broken pin. What is the state of your battery, and do you use your power plug/charger?

my old laptop had this happen, it was alright again when i just changed my battery

it might be overheating, but see if you can borrow a friend's with a similar size

if not, there's some at walmart for about $50 qq

Check the cooler and/or fan. It may be your laptop overheating or possibly as Planr said, check the power supply.

It's a hardware issue, try opening up your laptop and remounting some parts. If that doesn't work then it means something's broken and the computer is shutting off to prevent further damage. One thing you could try is to:

Remove your battery and unplug the charger, hold the power button down for 30+ seconds, plug the computer in and try to turn it on and then put the battery back in after like a half hour.
This process lets all power drain from the motherboard and any other component in the system.

where did op go
setro and acerblock are notorious for making a huge amount of help topics and ditching them 1 minute later. that or they completely ignore every advice people give them and just do nothing. then 1 week later they make the same topic. forget them both

Call me crazy if I'm wrong, but how the hell does the CPU temperature go from 56 to 46 in 2 seconds?
Also, I was in bed, jesus christ.

I think Speedfan occasionally has fluctuations. I wouldn't called it completely accurate, but it usually hits right at the mark.

Anything above 50 is concerning, 90+ is when you have a significant problem. You should also be hearing your fan work like crazy at this point; if it doesn't, you might have enough dust to clog up the fan.

If you're not interested in opening up your laptop and trying to address the problem manually, you may want to consider a laptop cooling pad, and also trying to down-clock your CPU/GPU so they won't reach as high temperatures.

make sure it's not overheating. if not, it could be a bad battery. get a new one.
