So me and my friend are trying to play terraria together
She has the game on her android phone and I have it on my iPhone
Is it even possible to play between ios and android and if so how do I do it?

Yes it is. One has to start the game, and another has to join a game. You both have to be on the same wifi network.

Actually, iPhones do this thing where you can't play games with android users for whatever reason. I tried this with a friend once. We both had Sonic 4 Episode II and we tried to play co-op. His Android could easily discover my iPhone, but mine could not see his. When he tried to connect while I was hosting, it would tell him that the connection was refused. We tried it again with Minecraft and the same thing happened.

I haven't been able to test the same wifi network cause she's using data and I'm using wifi with a vpn

What i mean is that you both have to be in the same room/house together. You cannot play over the internet.
