..what??

It's common knowledge that there are four weeks in a month. There are 52 weeks in a year, divided by 12 months, that's 4 1/3 weeks in the average month. So that's $4,333.33 a month. Or, a yearly salary of 52*1,000 or 52,000. That's actually plenty to live on for just two people, so either your payment obligations are much too expensive (e.g. 2k a month rent + utilities) or your dad has a secret gambling problem.

I'm paying like $500 a month for car insurance. No accidents or tickets.
you live in cali

you live in cali

Indeed I do. I'm not sure why you said that though.

Good lord do you eat anything other than fast food?
If money is a problem then going somewhere to eat/get take away is the worst choice.
You can eat home cooked meals for days at the price of that stuff (to be fair I know it's cheaper in America(I'm assuming you're there))
A bag of frozen veggies, some chicken and a stir fry sauce can make a meal big enough to last you at least 2 days, is easy as 123 and cheap as hell.
Trust me your situation isn't as bad as you think it is, both because you can get by with that much money and because I'm sure your dad is able to handle it, as he will have done many, many times in the past (the only difference is you knowing about it)
Above all else remember that the amount of food you regularly eat is far more than enough, you don't need 3 meals a day and constant snackage to get by. Just don't eat so much (double point, your stomach shrinks anyway so you wouldn't want as much food as before)
My parents were pretty lower-mid class earners, coupled with having 5 children hunger was something that happened sometimes, if there was no food there was no food, pretty simple. Lived anyway.
On the bracketed topic of shrunken stomachs, if you haven't experienced it much before you'd be surprised how little you want to eat. After living in the Philippines I couldn't eat more than half a sandwich every day or two, it was great.
My stomach is tiny right now and trust me it saves money.
The funny thing is that now I could go buy out a whole shopping aisle and feast like a king, yet I still go days without food because I cbf going to the shop to buy some.

I did some research, and I found out we could live on 6 Jack In The Box tacos every day (3 for each of us), Monday through Friday.
Nonononono

Glad I didn't need to type this.
A large bag of rice costs maybe $5 and lasts a couple weeks for a family of four. Vegetebles from the vegeteble section or frozen are usally your best bet. Don't get stressed buying $3/lb asparagus because you are getting more nutrients per dollar than your $7/lb chuck steak or whatever. There are lots of delicious recipes for living on a dime. Most of them involve pasta and rice.  But it's better than eating three tacos a day for a couple weeks.

Just make vegetable stir fry. Not stuffty for you and cheap.

California has some of the most expensive insurance rates in the country,

Just get a bunch of ramen

My god stir fry is incredible.

Honestly though OP, your dad has income coming in, and you should alter your lifestyles to fit it. My dad was unemployed for a year, picking up some odd jobs here and there, and we did just fine. It wasn't fun, but hey, you do what you have to do.

Just get a bunch of ramen
You could do this
Add some chicken breast and some veggies

yeah I'm quoted for $200 in Minnesota

I live in college. I spent $136 on food and other household items (paper towels, toilet paper, soap, etc.) last month. Buy cheaper food. Rice and beans are super cheap.

Yah.

Just cook some rice, cook some beans, season them with some salt, chili powder, and garlic and onion powder. Serve the newbs over the rice with some sour cream and cheese and it's really good.
