Author Topic: Build Techniques  (Read 3143 times)

I thought you guys loved Forum Games, so we'll try making a forum game based on giving each other advise and tips for constructing builds, or making practical defenses and etcetera.

The current topic is;
Defensive Building

Share tips on constructing structurally defensive buildings for fort wars, n00b minigames, and the like!

I personally think this could be in the wrong place. If it is, feel free to move it.

I suppose I should start;

Remember that rockets and other splash damage weapons can't break through bricks that are too thick.

On another hand, a sniper rifle can break thru anything.

For an effective base, try combining a large brick (The "Base") and an outer wall (The "Shield") made of many smaller bricks; For instance, have a 1x4x5 behind a wall of 1x4s. Further more, this makes it hard for anything to pierce through the wall, and makes for a good bunker technique.

Nothing seems to blow up 2x2x5 ramp bricks.

Build the 'Shield' from 1x2s or, preferably, 1x2f's, so that each brick is supporting the others.

Always keep a macro save of a brick trapper handy, in case n00bs attack.

For defending against zombies, build walls have of very small bricks. I recommend 1x2 plates.

The location of your base really matters. For Bedroom example, construct your base to corner of wall. This reduces amount of directions that you have to defend. Also, base under table or other object makes n00bs aerial attacks impossible.or atleast, reduces risk of it(N00bs always try to use flying vehicles to bomb structures).

Hinder enemy`s movement by constructing barricades and other stuff.
If possible, make secret passages to places. If they attack, you can just sneak behind `em and start killing.

It also decreases your number of escape routes, which are especially dangerous in servers that have modified weapons. When building your fort, you need to weigh the benefit between having fewer directions to defend from, and having fewer escape routes. Usually, if you build near but not directly on the wally, you can avoid having most of the attacks from behind, but you can also exit through the back of your base and strafe around the side. You get the added benefit of flanking anyone attacking when you use your back exits.

This is a good idea. It also provides sniper cover.

My notes:

- Larger bricks have a larger brick volume, and this makes them much more difficult to destroy.

- Setting larger bricks on top of smaller support bricks is treacherous for your defenses. If an enemy clears the support bricks and leaves the heavier bricks floating, those bricks will become much more vulnerable to weapon damage and generally they will be easier to destroy. Choose your structural combinations of bricks carefully.

- Transparency is dangerous in defenses, as it heavily diminishes the integrity of the bricks. Making a heavy brick transparent will make it much easier to destroy. Only use the heaviest of bricks when making windows, and be careful that it's not set on weak support bricks.

And you base this on what?

I'd suggest a door at least 10 bricks high at the back of your base to prevent people from getting in the back, while allowing you to get out without harm.

I remember Badspot (or someone) saying that transparent bricks and/or bricks with lights attached are easier to destroy in a deathmatch, with standard guns.

Yes, they are.

Actually, a 1x1 round plate can be shot out by a pistol if it has a light effect.

Even the largest transparent bricks can be broken by the rocket launcher (with the exception of a few bricks, like vehicle bricks, spawns, and baseplates) while some of the larger regular bricks are impossible to kill with the rocket launcher.

32x32 baseplates don't die. Spam away with them!

Wow, dang I need to remember that

I tend to make my builds pure trans yellow

Also...if you can get a scale change brick in there, its a good idea to make a "Vent system" for easy access around the base.  This works if you make ultra thick walls with a mini'd passageway in there.

also, while this is not placing bricks, I should discuss bot placement with Rky's ad-bot mod coming out very soon.

Sentry: It seems as though they don't target in a cone (yet), so dont try to make tower snipers. Make ground floor window snipers instead. This setting would also go well in patrol bots in your hallways, just make sure you yourself can get around them, as they cant choose between ally and enemy (yet)

Attack bots: Don't make them go after an enemy thats is easy to get to (like inside of a room with the entrance on the other side)

Fire: Try to hold this off unless their holding off enemys comming out from around a corner.  Fast fire weapons, of course.

Follow: just use the bot fetch command instead

Respawning: Remember that bots respawn facing north

Wander + sentry: Try to keep from doing this, because they'll shoot you as fast as they'll shoot your enemies. however this can still be effective, granted they dont get stuck in an odd corner.  Reserve wander for later until you ideot-proof your build.

My bot got stuck!: Theres a fetch command in the GUI

I know this isnt brick placing, but still, its useful should bots be allowed in your fort.
