Why are there only a few people on Blockland?

I just think it's weird that the game has over 100,000+ people who bought it and when I go to play the game, there isn't even 1% of those players online. I'm not trying to be a troll here i'm just confused that on rare occasions the most  the servers will have is 1,000. I'm not here to say that the game is bad or that the servers suck it's just that it's not really fun when the top servers are the same gamemodes and not many BIG servers that have something new to offer the people on it.

mostly because the game went to retail in 2007, since then people started buying IDs
there are actually only about 70-80k IDs, when the game went on steam badspot reserved >100k IDs for Steam people

I haven't a stable enough internet connection to play. I just lurk the suggestions forums and make a mod every few weeks to stay contributive.

there is no way you can possibly get 1,000 in a server

I'd host a lot more if I had lots of time and no responsibilities (which I tend to shirk).
Also, I always get kinda disinterested when I host, since very few people join. That's either because there just aren't many people on, but also probably because I host at bad times on account of timezones.
