The only reason I could see builder mode being necessary is the first time you join and you don't have a base.  Once you have built a base, if being killed is that big of a problem:
    1. build inside so you dont get easily attacked and
    2. place a checkpoint so you can respawn right there. 
It can be annoying to be attacked in the middle of something but also incredibly fun to go grab some guns and hunt them down.

Edit: It is also FORTWARS.  So once you have a base you're technically at war with everyone.  But before you have a base... well you need time to build a semi-decent one imho.

1)Yes.
2)Place down a vehicle spawn.
3)Set spawn to "Missile Silo."
4)Grab a "Missile Controller" item.
5)Link your controller to the silo by firing at it.
6)????

i think buildermode is a pretty stuffty idea
when me and nav were making our third base, we were attacked from all sides, over and over, and it took some serious cooperation [and hiring a guy with a russian helicopter] to actually get anything done, and it was fun as hell

it also justified us going on a havoc rampage later so yeah

this. i can see buildermode being good for newer/younger players but i honestly prefer juggling building and fighting. it's more fun like that
