I have three boards of wood about 4 1/2 feet long and 3 feet wide,

Should I use HO-scale, or N-scale?

I would have 2x more space with N,
HO scale allows easier DIY projects,

Can you explain what an N-scale is and what an HO-scale is?

"The term N gauge refers to the track dimensions, but in the UK in particular N gauge refers to a 1:148 scale with 1:160 (9 mm or 0.354 in) track gauge modelling.

Definition of HO SCALE. : a scale of 3.5 millimeters to one foot used especially for model toys (as automobiles or trains)" -google

I don't think anyone on these forums has any experience in this, wtf?

You said HO allows for easier DIY projects, so do that

personally i've had a little bit of experience with one or two sets, and i vastly prefer HO. personal preference though.

Depends on how big you want your scenery, N you could put more down because its way smaller, where as HO is much more common and you can build at a decent scale.

I'd go with N scale. More space is always nice.

Its a little hard to get supplies for N scale though.

HO scale has more products in its size, allows for more detail and rolling stock is easier to handle (rolling stock is locomotives and train cars). More expensive though and obviously takes up much more space

N scale is considerably smaller and cheaper, but obviously does not allow for quite as much detail. Generally less expensive.

I prefer HO just because of its size and accessability. With HO you can create a decently sized layout with those boards.

I'm surprised to see someone on the BLF who is interested in model railroading

HO scale is my personal favorite. I used to have a similar table.

N-scale is great due to space but it's less detailed so there's your trade-off.

N-Scale is also harder to find, in my area (and in most) most parts can only be obtained through buying the sets.

I've always thought N scale railways were more interesting and fun. You have a fair amount of room but I'm not sure how well it would accommodate HO scale

you'd be surprised how many different hobbies people here have. not that it's one of mine, but I'm sure there's a handful of people here who do model railroads.

I might start a model railroad if i ever have the time to.

Oh okay, you're doing a model railway.  Makes more sense now.

I thought this was an engineering project.
