So pixels are pretty hot right now.

The problem is that they're being overused. I was there screaming at the beginning about the endless pixel games, and I think more people are catching on to all the repetition. Now I find myself yearning to create a game with low-res graphics myself, and it's putting me in a crCIA.

I told myself that there's a certain feeling that pixelated graphics give off, and that I could recreate it some other way. Maybe it didn't have to do with the resolution–maybe it was something about the limited palette, or the way the sprites moved. From that I tried a lot of techniques to get that pixel-feel without actually having pixelated visuals. I tried just drawing my tilesets at much larger resolutions, and that didn't work. Then I tried just using a limited palette, and that didn't work. I even tried to use pixel-scaling algorithms like HQX, but that method provided a lot of weird artifacts that I wasn't too big about.

So now I'm making a tileset in 24x24, and I feel defeated. If I make a game with this kind of aesthetic now, is it too late? Will people write it off as being another pointless retro throwback? I like this visual style because it's fun to make and lends itself really well to modularity, but releasing a game like this will just stain my reputation. I could be making the most groundbreaking cool game of the century later, and the public will just be like "naw man he made that dumb retro 8-bit indie stuff like 10 years ago he's just a hack". I know I'm stressing too much about this but I need security and closure. I just want to make a game and have fun doing it.

I guess the main question I'm asking is how you personally feel about games with pixel graphics, and pixel art in general.

Make something original...

Don't let public opinion affect the games you want to make.

Make a game because you want to make it, and make it the way you want it to.

Also, pixel-esque games are being released to this day, you would have no problems releasing a game using a graphics style like that.

Personally, I like games with this style for the simplicity gives it a charm of it's own, which is nice. And is also much easier to make than a 3D game.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

i know exactly what you mean

i'd say don't worry about it. there's nothing wrong with pixel graphics. a lot of developers nowadays are stupid hipsters who need to give off a "retro vibe" or some nonsense, but as long as you make your game fun i'm sure people won't mind.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

I really hate the fact that every indie game is going "minimalist" or pixel in order to get the nostalgia effect.

i don't think you read the op

he's not doing it to create a nostalgia effect

Dont make it a survival game like Minecraft and Terraria

Make it unique in a way

Pixelation isn't so much a visual style as it is a medium. Think of the impressionists who used a painterly method of painting with large visible brush-strokes. They were still painting landscapes and other outdoor scenes, but the technique they used was different. Pixel-art is the same. The only thing that makes something pixelated is the fact that it has a low-resolution. Beyond that, it can be anything. You're free to play around with colors and subject-matter. The reason why I'm drawn to pixel-art for this project is that it's the easiest way to make varied tilesets and character animations quickly. I tried to make a tileset at a large resolution, and it was difficult and awkward. It's hard to make it tile seamlessly, and the work just takes too long with too little pay-off. Forget about character animation.

Besides the visuals, the sound design isn't beeps and boops. It's realistic with symphonic sounds. One thing I keep having to remind myself is that when it comes to art assets in games, visuals aren't everything. Audio and movement lend heaps of quality to a game.

Make what you wanna make, i'm making a pixely game myself and i'm making it purely for enjoyment.
If it gets sold that's nice but i just make what i want to make and have fun doing it.

you may be able to replicate the feel of it with low-poly or square based art

i think as long as it looks good, nobody will care that it's ''''retro-style''''. in fact, if it looks bad, it'll just be because it looks bad. just find out what looks good and do it.
just make what's in ur harte mate ,3

pixel art takes minimal effort to make. there are so many games today using this because the devs can use it as an excuse to produce stuff quality art and get away with it.

all of those games were made over 2 years ago
yeah, they sure are 'hot right now'
