Ok, that fixes every problem except one. Where is the shiftback animation located at?

I'd do %player.playThread(2,animation), since slot 0 is for things like walk, run, jump. If you were crouching and used the 'spear', it would make you stand up and shift back your arm.

What joints are necessary for spear objects?

You need two models, one for the projectile and one for the model in-hand. The 'fire' animation of the spear consists of it disappearing for half a second then reappearing. Open spearProjectile.dts or spear.dts in Notepad and look at the nodes and model stuff at the bottom. It's next to the stuff like 'shape' or 'detail32'.
