Author Topic: Are current math systems crap?  (Read 3361 times)

There's 4 levels recognized by the majority of america

Smart
Average
Stupid
Absolutely loving handicapped
what they don't recognize is what's in between
they only set up their courses for the smart and the stupid
there is no in-between

I love my current math class, and it's a public school too.
Subject matter is well presented, teacher is great, homework is all right.

I already took trig last year, in geometry.
They put me in Geometry before they put me through Algebra 2, I'm taking it this year with the juniors. I'm a senior.
thats what you are supposed to do though

you need to know geometry and graphing stuff in order to effectively go through algebra 2

well, at the very least, to the common core standards.

Well then, in that case they need to fix the grading.

we're taking trig right now in my geometry class and i don't understand stuff. i've just taken to drawing snakes all over the papers.

but that's the fun subject

or rather, the issue is that they only view people on those levels and totally neglect the fact that someone may be classified as "stupid" because they have a disability that hinders their learning. i.e, i have dyslexia and therefore jumble things up a lot, and i also have an issue with my eyes that makes it difficult for me to focus on what i'm reading (i see the words but they don't make sense, other times i can't focus at all and the letters just have bizarre red outlines that make them hard to read). if it weren't for my strict upbringing, i'd probably be stuck in the "stupid" category.

but that's the fun subject
the teacher won't explain it to me bc i'm considered a smart student (by this i mean i actually apply myself and manage to make a's whereas my classmates are lazy and deliberately get in trouble/don't do their work) so i just kinda sit there confused all class period. it's so stressful because the stuff my dad put me through in homeschooling gave me social anxiety so 1) it's super difficult for me to even go to someone for help when i don't understand and 2) my classmates are of the belief that i know everything and therefore always come to me for help and it's so stressful

you have the right to ask again

a teacher can't deny you of learning something because you have a high standard

idk i always kinda teach myself in math
it's always stuck p easily cus math is just how it is. no smoke and mirrors, p little memorisation, and there's always a way to break it down into basic forms to understand it

math is beautiful and i love it

make that

a.k.a. the same thing in grading standards

I was put in regular classes at my old school until I moved to a new one, where they moved me up two grades in math

I was like: "what the heck"

one of the huge problems is that there is no "exceeding region," just a measly honors class which is usually just for show to say "we have a ton of honors students"

the traditional grading scale is kinda goofy in some ways

for a lot of people, it acts in a perpetual discouragement loop wherein the person makes a bad grade, loses confidence or is generally put off, and has their performance impacted as a direct result, which, in turn, causes more bad grades, and more off-putted-ness, and so on and so forth. obviously, this doesn't happen with all people. i honestly don't care so much about grades as i do understanding the material on a complex level. i don't keep up with assignment dates (except for due dates of course) because i figure that, if i understand the material, i should be able to apply it to any situation i need to. and this has held true throughout my entire schooling career. the trick, of course, is knowing how you best learn and knowing how to help yourself or how to get help when you need it. you also have to understand that you have no obligation to tackle things on your own accord that you are not capable of or you are bound to be unsuccessful in. i had to quit AP us history because AP history is a bunch of poopy but nonsense personally

Haha to all you that think trig is hard. You're going to have bunches of fun when you get to calculus.

trig is awesome and useful and cool like sunglasses

Jokes on you, I don't have to take it.

trig is like the one thing in math thats hard to me
