Author Topic: Would aluminum/lead weapons be any good?  (Read 2688 times)

Its still a fairly heavy piece of metal.

When I say it's soft, I don't mean you can hit it against your skin and bend it. It will still hurt if you get hit by it with any sizeable amount of force.

well even stainless steel(s) are really stuffty for blades lol.
something being able to be sharp dosnt mean it makes a good blade. its gotta stay sharp after using XD
stainless is very very very soft. but its cheap and looks pretty.

So... Minor padding as armor?

Maybe I can make aluminum armor to go with it, just to ensure a bit of protection, especially for the hands.

It might actually be a better idea to just buy actual gauntlets instead.

i have stuffloads of "can" aluminum that i separate the chromium to have.
i only use aluminum if im working some kinda wet cell with copper scrap.

also dont collect it from foil. its like 50% there lol even worse.
I've melted aluminium cans down before and casted it, took a while over a basic coke fire though, I've also did it with lead in a cast iron pan over a cooker
metalwork is fun

isn't lead poisonous though like what if they hold your weapon and eat things later

Have you turned the aluminum into anything?

And I doubt that lead would be THAT poisonous, I'm not going to leave shavings of whatever I make on there like a dumb.

aluminium
Go away, UK grammar!

aluminum is stuffty for anything that will get struck with another object.  In order for armor to be tough enough it would have to be extremely thick and consequently heavy.  Aluminum is light but not that light.

i cut and file/bend aluminum every day - it's probably too weak compared to steel or something. the geometry would be really important in terms of making sure there aren't any easily bent points, because if there are any flat sections, they can be bent even by hand

surprised nobody mentioned lead bullets.

Also, OP, keep in mind aluminum isn't like steel which often can be bent back into shape without significant damage to the structural integrity of the metal; bend it once even a bit (except for really thin pieces), and you've lost most of your strength. It's also not really all that rigid/springy like steel - it doesn't "bounce back" nearly as well. In short, use it either for makeshift projectile weapons or for show, but practical use in melee is basically completely out of the question.

It is, however, very easy to work with and is much lighter than steel, so it does have its pluses.

As for lead, be careful - it is more harmful to your health when working with it. It is also very heavy and soft, so it's not practical for basically any form of weaponry except maybe old-fashioned replicas and such.

Bullets are made out of lead because lead is dense. Axes and Swords aren't good when they're dense

I'm planning on using aluminum as a sort of practice before I ever decide to move on to iron and steel. The weapons I make of each weren't meant to be long term.

Out of curiosity, how much could a sharp aluminum sword sell for? Coke-Baby Jeremy has already expressed interest in owning one.

no I just casted it into a soup can

also don't you have to put soap on the aluminium until it turns black so that it strengthens it

Lead is great if you want to kill somebody, but want to kill them very slowly.
