Noedit: Goddamn, I was trying to click preview and I hit post by mistake. I meant to quote:
Everybody ignored my request.
as well.
Anyway, Furling was an odd fellow, but I found him interesting and pretty fun to hang around with. In spite of his conditions, whatever he faces, he always seemed to be pretty happy with his life. I envy that, really.
Fond memories, too. I remember one night I stayed up late on a Saturday night and Furling posted a topic titled "If you are drank then you are going gone nut", or something to that effect. That entire topic cracked me up, even though the second half was nothing but people posting pictures of cop cars. The entire thing would be creepy as all hell if he was posting seriously with a straight face, but I'm pretty sure he was laughing along and just seeing where the topic would go.
Yeah, he was creepy sometimes. Yeah, he was stupid sometimes. I think both of those mostly happened when he was drunk. But like I said, we have a lot of creepy and/or stupid people on these forums. We have plenty of other forumers who I would rather see gone.
His V20 server was a submarine TDM, which I SA'd on and helped with the eventing. Sure, it was buggy (the Slam Shotgun ignored the ammo system, becoming the Spam Shotgun). Sure, he sometimes pulled a Homing RL on unsuspecting players (I actually bound a key to send an eval command to forcekill him every time, as part of the humor, and some people actually found it hilarious going up against a guy with a Homing RL). But it was pretty interesting. It got a lot of players, and it seemed to be one of those cool server ideas that was awesome while it lasted and then sorta died off. I'm kinda surprised nobody else has tried it; the only terrain part was the hills and the underwater terrain, modter bricks took care of the rest.
Those were good times.
He posted topics that some people found interesting. I'm kinda baffled as to how they constituted "spam" at the rate of one or two per week (from the numbers you guys mentioned), since some forumers actually liked to discuss them. I remember when he posted one article about Blue Dragons or something like that, some sort of incredible-looking sea slug, and how a whole bunch of them had washed up on a beach somewhere. That was one of the coolest things I remember ever seeing on this forum, actually.
Personally, I'm gonna miss him. He made addons, he scripted, he modeled, he posted news and tried to start discussions about it, and to me he always seemed like a pretty constructive person. He sure made my day a fair number of times. One of those people I really wish I had talked to more, in retrospect.
I'm not saying his disability or whatever excuses his behavior, but I found it best to just take everything he did as all in good fun.
