I should clarify I was not on those accident scenes. The locations of the accidents were out of my department's jurisdiction. I've been lucky so far to not have to witness a truly gruesome accident scene. However this is what I plan on doing for the rest of my life so it will happen to me eventually. I did however know the victim in the first car accident I talked about, he was a close childhood friend of mine.
I do understand the point of making jokes to cope with death, especially being an emergency responder, it is almost necessary to have this dark sense of humor. Years and years of seeing burned and mangled bodies will forget you up. If you don't find some way to let it out it can effect your health.
So I do get what people are saying. But claiming you all are joking to cope is just plain stupid. You are saying it to try to be edgy and funny. If you are gonna make jokes don't try to cover it with some excuse about how you are doing it to deal with the death. Nobody believes it lol.
