Author Topic: the micro-meme theory  (Read 2669 times)

the micro-meme theory is a subset of the meme theory.

"A meme (/ˈmiːm/ meem) is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture." A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural brown townogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures."

the micro-meme is a short-lived repetition, and provides only short-term meme satisfaction. the micro-meme exists only when the conditions are near perfect, although not as perfect as the meme. the micro-meme is born from, for example, a ridiculous post, topic, or user. it is passed along and stretched out until its short life fizzles out and dies, and it is long forgotten. the micro-meme can thrive in many environments, like this forum, or other forms of social media. the death of a micro-meme is attributed to many factors, such as annoyance, or even something as simple as time. all memes die one day, and although the life of a meme is something so unpredictable that it cannot be pinned down, the micro-meme's life-span can be expected to range from just a few hours to a month. the line between micro-meme and meme is not one easily drawn, but can become increasingly obvious with time.

an absolutely fascinating phenomenon, and we are witnessing the death of a micro-meme at this very minute. a truly interesting field of study.

but we like to focus on the bigger memes, the epic memes. epic maymays, if you will
