Author Topic: Dear Server Hosters.  (Read 1851 times)

During these times where unlimited Internet is getting quite cheap.

would it not be better (and cheaper) to buy an actual server (Yes, the actual physical machine)?

Let's face the facts:

The average unlimited internet contract in the uk is £28 a month

Now, a Blockland Dedicated Server runs fast on almost any pc, a server is more suited to servers than a pc so you could get an old server cheap now tharbwillcprobably run 2-3 bl servers at the same time.

I bought a an old server for £100 and could run 2 tf2 servers on it. (It was a 64x bit though) So in a year while you could have spent $30 a month you could save alot each year with a one of payment for a server.

-Didn't know that will research-
Anyway.

Since you seem to be < 12 I'll fill you in on the fact that it is generally illegal to "sell internet space" (or whatever you want to call it) under a personal/family/private contract. Some kids have tried it here before and I believe they were getting C&Ds from Verizon. Unless you are paying for a contract specifically to run servers, though it's not worth it for a small-time server hoster within a game so insignificant as Blockland, don't even try. This is all assuming you are providing a service for other people.

This right here. Residential connections pretty much always state in their terms and conditions that you cannot resell your service or use the service to sell digital services.

I'm 14  :panda:

But you're right I guess. The rest of the topic is valid though since you can run a server yourself just not sell it to others.

I seriously wasn't aware of that...

I will search into that though it might be cheaper than you think for a server hosting contract.

The vast majority of Blockland servers are hosted from people's homes.

I'm the only one :panda:

The main reason people buy a VPS or use a dedicated server is for reliability. My internet speed is around 30 MB/s which should, in theory, be enough to host several dedicated servers.
My internet, however, is shared throughout the entire house. In total we have 2 Xboxes, a Wii, 4 computers, and 4 smartphones running off of the same connection. If one of these devices decides to install an update, somebody decides to stream a Movie, or install a game on Steam any server I would be running would get a massive increase in latency.
My computer is more than capable of handling 50+ players but I would have to leave it running 24/7, drastically increasing my energy usage and my electricity bills.

Piff electricity costs penniesbthesedays. It's so cheap these ISPs could probably halve their price by now, but nah they just want lodsemone.

If cspire would ever get their fiber optic internet to my area then I would be able to host servers

Nah they're 2ch33p4u remember it costs about a penny to send billions of electrical impulses. I'm surebthey can afford it.

Anyone who is serious about hosting something gets a VPS. I suggest NFO, they get their data directly from upstream providers and are all around a very good and reliable option. Cheap for what they provide as well.
