Author Topic: College & University comparison & bragging thread  (Read 4447 times)

Hey fellow college student BL players, since winter break is winding down (at least for me) let's compare richard sizes things about our colleges that we love and things we don't.

When are you going back?: January 11
When do classes start?: January 12
Are you out of state/international? Yes.

College name: The Ohio State University
College location: Columbus, Ohio, USA
Sports nickname and mascot: Buckeyes, Brutus Buckeye

Majors & minors, prof programs, etc: Speech and Hearing Science major, Linguistics secondary major
Year: Freshman
Do you live on campus?: Yes
How are the dorms (n/a if off)?: Mine has no a/c so the first few weeks sucked, but other than that we have a great community.
Classes you're excited about next semester: Language and the Mind (Ling 3701), Semantics (Ling 4400), German Lit 1 (Ger 2101)

What's the best part about your college?: It's not too far from shopping, restaurants or downtown. We have over 50k students so you're bound to find people/things to do that you like as well.
What's the worst part about your college?: The neighborhood is bad, but we have campus police so it's not terrible. The campus is also loving huge so it's not unheard of to walk half an hour to class if the bus doesn't go close to your building.

Yay we won the Sugary Cereal Bowl woo

College location: Oneonta, New York
Sports nickname and mascot: Red Dragons

Majors & minors, prof programs, etc: Hydrology/Water Resources major, Environmental Science minor

How are the dorms (n/a if off)?: It's alright, three bedrooms and one roommate so plenty of room.
Classes you're excited about next semester: None really but I have a cool internship I start in the spring.

What's the best part about your college?: One of the top party schools in the country because it's in such a small town. Students can get away with a lot of stuff.
What's the worst part about your college?: It's in a small town so there's not much to do off-campus for miles.

northwestern university chicago il

When are you going back?:
Today - January 4th
When do classes start?:
Tomorrow - January 5th

College name:
University of Wales Trinity Saint David's; Lampeter
College location:
Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales
Sports nickname and mascot:
The Wolves(?) - No mascot, just a logo of a wolf, I think. That might not be ours actually, but it's one of the 3 teams/mascots that belong to one of the 3 Welsh campuses of Trinity Saint Davids

Majors & minors, prof programs, etc:
Course: BA Ancient and Medieval History
Year:
First Year (Fresher)
Do you live on campus?:
Yes
How are the dorms (n/a if off)?:
Fairly decent, little old. Less than 5 minutes from closest lectures.
Classes you're excited about next semester:
Knights and Castles

What's the best part about your college?:
It's a very very small university, housing roughly 1000-2000 students in any year (closer to 1k on average). This means you get small classes, almost never having a lecture with more than 100 people attending, and usually having 60 at most. Furthermore there are plenty of occassions for 1-to-1 learning and discussion with lecturers.
We also boast being the third oldest university in the UK, after Oxford and Cambridge, being built in 1822.
And being near on the middle of Wales, we have access to lots of archaeological sites of all kinds, both pre-Roman, Roman and Medieval.
In addition to that we boast a collection of medieval mstar fishcripts that rivals that of many colleges of Oxford.
What's the worst part about your college?:
Being so so small there's very little around. The town is but a small market town of 1-2k population (ignoring students obviously). You can feel rather isolated. We don't have many shops, particularly highstreet brand shops, nor many facilities like cinemas and theatres.
There's also the issue that should you get to dislike someone, as you surely will, you won't help but bump in to them regularly.

Furthermore, we're in Wales. So there's a lot of things to needlessly remind you of that, such as every little thing having both the English and Welsh written down.
And the University, like most, boasts trying to be green and environmentally aware, but is happy to use the double the paper/ink sending everything twice, once in English and then once in Welsh.

And my god can it be difficult to understand a Ceredigion Welshman speak English in their accent.

(This is an old picture. The large playing field and tennis courts in the bottom have now been removed, and a large garden area is being installed at the moment)
