Author Topic: how to install ubuntu to a flash drive?  (Read 625 times)

i have this macbook air and its 128 gb flash memory, i have a 32 gb flash drive and i was wondering how i could nistall ubuntu ON the flash drive, not from it to my computer, so i can just stick it in then run ubuntu

The easiest option requires two flash drives.

Load the contents of the ubuntu live iso onto flashdrive A, which is probably smaller than your 32Gb flashdrive B.
Plug flash drives A and B into the macbook
Boot onto flash drive A, run the install process
During the install, have it format flash drive B as the primary installation drive and make sure it writes the bootloader on there too
Enjoy your new linux flash drive B.

rufus. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

or you could google how to dd the image over the the USB drive via terminal on the mac.

You could also use a CD instead of a second USB stick.

I think this is the one the Ubuntu documentation recommends.

EDIT: Yep.

Plug in flash drive, select ISO, and check it as live drag the bar to allocate space.

Wow, like three USB Linux installers have been suggested.

I wonder how many more there are.
