Author Topic: Upgrade from i5 2500k?  (Read 1014 times)

I've been running an i5 2500k since April, 2011. (currently with Nvidia 670 FTW SLI, 16GB 1,600MHz RAM, 250GB SSD, and in 2560x1440).

I'm running games fine, but I was wondering if upgrading to a newer generation of processor would benefit me a lot with heavy image processing and editing. Also, I have no experience with hyperthreading (although I know it's i7 specific). Would it make a significant difference in programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom?

wouldn't that fall under the jurisdiction of your graphics card?

Upgrading your processor just to get hyperthreading would have little to no effect in photoshop or lightroom. It would help if you're trying to encode videos though. Your current cpu, as it is though, is definitely not a bottleneck for the gpu.

This isn't just about hyperthreading. That's just another question. And no, Waru, a GPU doesn't really effect what I'm asking about.

More RAM would benefit mostly, but you have 16GB's, so you're fine lol.

Well, forget upgrading. I now have a stable and cool 4.8GHz overclock.

Photoshop definitely uses a lot of RAM, so if you do upgrade at ALL, you'd want faster memory. Depending on your Windows type (home premium/prof), you could put in more RAM.

what kind of cooling, i do 4.5 usually.

I'm pretty sure I'm good there.
