I've never tried peanut butter.

http://ell.stackexchange.com/questions/18831/how-to-identify-the-correct-pronunciation-for-letter-g-before-i-or-e
which is backed by their own link http://theweek.com/articles/463959/why-are-there-two-pronunciations-letter-g
But I'd also like to point out the fact that GIFT is pronounced with a hard G. Its not jift.
ok, just for a second let's ignore the fact that someone used a completely unsourced article on a news site as their source
I'm still not sure how any of that proves your point?

What if someone who pronounces it with a j, shows you a gif of the peanut butter brand jif, he asks if you like the jif.
What do you do if you like one but hate the other.

obama says gif therefor it is gif

do you like the jif.

Nonnel where is my option for jee-eye-eff?

it's supposed to be pronounced g.i.f you idiots
This is a good compromise

oh also
Well gif stands for graphics interchange format. The G in graphics is a hard G, so it would be gif not jif.
this is ridiculous
if saying this is what it's come to, then you're just trying too hard to prove that your way is the "right" way

OSHA, for example, is pronounced "oh-shuh"
it stands for "Occupational Safety and Health Administration"
"occupational" starts with an "ah", not an "oh"
This is a good compromise
it's not really a compromise

hey did you enjoy that gif

no i'm allergic to peanuts

Its close enough for me to care. We can't agree on which is right, so g.i.f. is pretty neutral since you can't really debate its pronunciation (unless you say g as guh-ee for some reason).
