Any way to convert my phone to the Google Play Edition and still receive OTAs?

In November of 2014, Google introduced their latest iteration of their Android OS: Lollipop. I currently have the Moto G (2013) XT1034. It is still running Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat, even though Motorola claimed they would provide fast updates to this device.

Needless to say, I am less than happy that 4 months later, I have yet to receive any update for my phone.

Now, Motorola/Google used to sell the Google Play Edition Moto G, which got the update very quickly, because it runs 100% stock Android (the Moto G from Motorola runs near stock, but with a few improvements).

I'm wondering if there's any way to convert my phone to the Google Play Edition (I know this much is possible), unroot it, and go from there like it was a GPE all along and just get the OTA updates as they come out normally.

I'm not particularly interested in flashing custom ROMs and stuff, I just want 5.0 on my Moto G.

I don't actually have service on the device. I use it essentially like one would a tablet.

youre gonna wait a long time, just get the cyanogenmod it has way more features (but also bloatware, its still cool tho)

Cm has additional applications because you can flash without google apps

The moto g has stuff ROM support because of it being a budget phone, you can get lollipop though via unlocking your boot loader and flashing a ROM which I've helped many people with

its not their first priority, they have second gen devices too and I think its stupid that they would be that late when its aosp. iirc they're sending out soak tests though

did you get carrier specific? If its not the Verizon variant I can help you flash 5.0, but in the form of a custom rom

How fast does Cyanogenmod typically update their ROMs, and will I recieve OTAs with it?

I'd only do it if I can install it once and not have to worry about it again. In fact, I'd probably want to unroot when I'm done and relock the bootloader.

you can't relock with a custom rom iirc, CM releasees daily so. but if you want to go back it just as easy

Ok, well it's too late tonight, and I'll be busy tomorrow and possibly Sunday, so I'll give it some thought and ask my... more technically inclined... friends their opinions.
