Military Info: A military that is as diverse as the city-states and small nations that make up Vlast.
Military theorists argue over the best structure and tactics to use. As it stands, there are four main components to the Vlastic military doctrine; Footmen, and their subsequent Fire-pikemen, Light cavalry, heavy cavalry, and artillery.
Footmen are the main constituents of the military. They are armed with medium-length smoothbore flintlock guns. The current weapon flaunts a semi-permanently fixed bayonet. Some regiments wear iron carapaces, though it is uncommon. Soldiers carry any number of suitable melee weapon, usually chosen by the soldier themselves. Fire-pikemen are named as they are soldiers who wear heavy armor on the fronts of their bodies, their guns are longer than normal, as if a spear was fashioned into a gun. They are uncommon and usually used to shield infantry from cavalry, using old pikemen tactics. There are 35,000 Footmen in service, amongst them are 8,000 fire-pikemen. Each regiment contains at least one unit of fire-pikemen.
Light cavalry are a shock-and-awe force, used for scouting and the exploitation of poorly-managed flanks. They are armed with sabres and shot-pistols, a short, twin-barreled, flintlock shotgun-pistol, which are used just about once. Light cavalry have higher mobility and use less resources than heavy cavalry. 7,000 Light Cavalry are in service.
Heavy cavalry are used to combat light cavalry, appearing as knights from some 200 years ago. They use specially-bred horses that can carry the weight of the armor they wear and the armored man that rides them. The armor is a mixture of maile and solid plating. These men carry lances or spears, depending on the unit. They are most often deployed to collapsing flanks to eliminate light cavalry causing the havoc. They are not offensive, but internal security. They are not very mobile and can have a hard time getting to the battle. These units are also resource intensive. There are 3,000 heavy cavalry in service.
Lastly there are the artillerymen. Vlastcovites
love artillery. A there is a large force of artillerymen among the ranks of the military. There are two types of guns, field guns, and heavy guns. Field guns are medium-bore artillery used to shell enemy lines. Heavy shelling almost always indicates an attack. Heavy guns are large-bore howitzers, not usually deployed to the battle, but usually used in sieges. There are 1,500 field guns in existence, alongside 250 howitzers.
The navy of Vlast is disproportionally small to the nations size, only really used to combat pirates. There is only one man-of-war active, and two more ships of the line. There are a dozens of smaller frigates however.
