How do I make a GIF file size smaller without losing too much quality?

The avatar I want to upload is apparently too big, it's 15kb. What's the maximum file size for uploading a new avatar, and how can I make a GIF that small without losing too much quality?

maybe badspot should make like an official post about it in the help section and sticky it or something. honestly don't know how much that would help though. since, for example, you posted it in off-topic instead. he did mention it once, but I'm having trouble finding that post

Dunno, doesn't matter. I have never had an issue with the filesize limits for avatars.

After running the apng through apng2gif:

gif: 3.05 KB
apng: 2.83 KB

It really depends on the image itself though.
