Author Topic: Sister is getting a cat, how to prepare  (Read 1490 times)

She is getting a kitten for her 23rd birthday ( holy stuff ) and Dad and I are against it but my mom said she is getting one for her because they both want a cat. I'm sure my dogs will have fun having a cat around, staring at them through the window.

My brother and his partner own two cats and I know how they are. Just how do I prepare to have a cat in my house, just a list of things to buy, etc.

Edit: I should have put this in here, I don't like cats. I hated the idea from the start and no one in my family has allergies.

Get ready for the allergy apocalypse.

A litterbox and scratching post are all you really need.
For toys, just little round fabric balls, and a string with something attached are usually enough to make them happy.

No one in my family is allergic to cats except my grandmother

Get a puppy
Two huskies are enough

A box of allergy relief pills, a chinese recipe book, and the stuff jubel said.

Why a cat? They don't play but eat and mess stuff up. They don't like to be held like some dogs. At least the one I've seen. Dumb investment in my opinion.

Make sure Pie Crust, Foxscotch, and Frequency stay out of your house. Or whoever were the ones were saying things in that thread if I'm wrong.

Pie Crust...

Your sister is 23 and she still lives with you?

Anyways, cats are really easy to take care of. Ive been around them all my life. All you really need is cat food, a litterbox and some toys. Other than that cats are really independent and can take care of themselves. They'll go outside for days at a time and you don't even need to worry about them.

I also recommend getting flea medication such as revolution and apply it pretty often.

Yep...

We have bears, coyotes, and all that fun stuff so my sister isn't letting that cat out.

This is true. My cat has gone missing for anything up to 2 weeks at a time and just comes back hungry and wanting to go back outside.
Worm pills might also be a good investment if you're going to let them outside as well.

That shouldn't be a problem once the cat is maybe 3-4 months old or even older.
I live in a very similar environment and my cat is almost 5 years old. She's been quite the trooper so far.

You should probably let it out. Forcing a cat to stay indoors is pretty stupid in my opinion. There are coyotes, foxes, etc where my parents live too. Theyve had like 11 cats since they moved 22 years ago and only one of them got lost. She was 15 years old. Cats can fend for themselves outdoors.
