Apparently, he was running away because he owed child support. That was it. It's so loving sad. And now thanks to this cop, it's guaranteed that his children will never get that financial support.

but fighting an officer for his gun should at least have some punishment, even if it was excessive.

Where did the "taking his gun" part come in to play, all we know is that there was a scuffle and the stun gun fell to the ground. This could mean a lot of things.

I know plenty of bum dads that go through pick and leave woman like a candy rapper. If he isn't going to pay child support now, chances are he was never going to pay it in the future. Guess who the courts would have sent to come get this guy to make sure he pays support?
