Author Topic: Freedom of Speech infringement at my school?  (Read 7673 times)

At our school, April 17th (last Friday) was a "day of silence for LGBTQIA people" organized by our SOFA (loveual Orientation Friendship Acceptance) Club. They put posters throughout the halls of my school. Well, a group of kids decided it would be a good idea to tear down some of the posters after school last Friday and post it on social media. They were promptly suspended.

Now, I personally thought that suspension was a bit harsh, but I suppose it is justifiable. However, today, I noticed one of my friends was not in first hour. Well, I did some asking around, and turns out, he was suspended along with many others simply for LIKING the photo! All he did was press the LIKE button. This made absolutely no sense to me, as he had no role in the actual incident, but simply LIKED the photo, and even went and un-liked it later! I think school administration justified it on "bullying charges". I thought this was a HUGE overreaction, and maybe a misuse of power. What do you guys think? Is it too much, or is it justified?

Freedom of speech is there so the government can't arrest for you speaking about whatever you want. This has nothing to do with freedom of speech, this has everything to do with people being gigantic starfishs to people who have had to deal with a lot of crap. They deserved the suspension they got.

EDIT: To clarify, I meant the people who tore down the posters. Not the guy who liked the post.

who cares if they pulled down the posters
none of them should have been suspended

posters have rights too you know

Yeah.  They are not justified by being suspended from simply liking the photo.  They did not act to tear down the posters.

It's the same thing if you say that you want to kill the president, obviously where it counts, such as if you're being audited by police or the Department of Homeland Security, it can be ignored.  Lot's of people say it, but they are not taking an active role and carrying it out.  Obviously, if we all could be arrested for meditating on illegal things, there would be more population in jails than in cities in most cases.

yeah it's just a bunch of asswipes, i mean detentions are acceptable but suspensions are kinda over-punishment

But he did not partake in that at all, only temporarily liked the photo.

ya how dare ANYONE try to make children feel good about themselves. just GROSS. all children should be constantly miserable if you ask me. especially the..... gays *shudders*

Your school sounds pretty awesome. At my school they have huge banners saying "TRUST IN GOD" in the hallways. I mentioned it to a teacher once and they were like "uh it doesn't say the christian god so you can interpret it however you want." It's a public school.

We recently had a pro-abstinence assembly teaching the values of waiting till marriage to have love.

edit: Was gonna make a comment about the Oklahoma School System but then I saw we are both from Oklahoma. That's pretty surprising.

Using a blog = Freedom of Speech
Wearing a shirt with a message = Freedom of Speech
Liking/Composing a Post = Freedom of Speech

You are literally handicapped if you believe freedom of speech ends at the noises made by your throat.

I have that in my school too. In fact, almost all of Canada's school's has some sort of LGBT club/organization.
It's honestly not a bad thing.

Punishment was necessary, but they really shouldn't have been suspended.
By all means it's just disrespect tearing down any kind of poster.

the medium isn't why it has nothing to do with freedom of speech

Forgot to mention, I was only meaning for the people who tore down the poster. A suspension for liking the photo is indeed quite harsh, but whether or not it was deserved is up to opinion. If he liked it because he wants to encourage discrimination against lgbt people, which is how the school took the intentions of the people who tore down the posters, then it was definitely deserved, imo. Discrimination like racism, loveism, orientation discrimation, stuff like that really shouldn't be tolerated at all in schools.

No need to be an starfish; my point still stands. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech because nobody was arrested. Nobodies rights have been violated.
