The first season has a movie format, broken into nine episodes, following Brian's acceptance into Video Game High School, and his first week there. He struggles to fit in and clashes with The Law, and gets expelled, but signs up for first-person shooter (FPS) tryouts, and gets accepted onto the Junior Varsity (JV) team. The second season has a television format, with story lines of every main character in each episode, and takes place over a longer time. The VGHS Varsity FPS team is disqualified from its season, and the JV team, including Jenny and Brian and coached by Jenny's mother, takes its place. Over the course of the season Jenny and Brian begin secretly dating, Jenny copes with having her mother back in her life, Brian tries to connect with his mother, Ted tries to fit in with the drifters, Ki finds her place at VGHS, and The Law picks himself up after losing so much.
Brian D-Brian Doheny (Josh Blaylock), commonly referred to by his gamertag, is the primary protagonist of the Video Game High School series. An avid and enthusiastic gamer, he is launched into the spotlight after defeating the world renowned amateur player The Law on live television, being accepted into the elite gaming academy VGHS. Brian eventually falls for the captain of his team, Jenny Matrix.
Theodore Wong-Theodore "Ted" Wong (Jimmy Wong) is Brian D's best friend and roommate ever since Brian stood up for him against two bullies. Ted is the son of Freddie Wong (character), a three-time Guitar Hero world champion who teaches rhythm gaming at VGHS, and struggles to please his father by following in his footsteps.
Kimberly Swan-Kimberly "Ki" Swan (Ellary Porterfield) enrolls at VGHS at the same time as Brian, and two become instant good friends. Ki is the daughter of two famous game inventors, and has expressed interest in pursuing a similar career, though also shows great skills in a variety of gaming genres and is incredibly knowledgeable.
Jenny Matrix-Jenny Matrix (Johanna Braddy) is the former captain of the Junior-Varsity (JV) FPS team at VGHS and a fierce gamer, ranked as #6 in the entire school—though is able to (sometimes easily) defeat higher ranked players. She describes herself as coming from an "FPS family" and is determined to join the Varsity FPS team at VGHS. Brian D falls for her and it gets a bit awkward because she is Brians captain but in season 2 things get a little better with Jenny and Brian when Jenny tells her mom that she is dating Brian.
The Law-The Law (Brian Firenzi) is the world's #1 amateur gamer, as well as the captain of the VGHS Varsity FPS team. He is the main antagonist of the series after he is humiliated on live television by Brian D in what was supposed to be a flawless display of his skills.
