Author Topic: Blogland: I didn't need a life anyway.  (Read 742 times)

To preface this, in the Australian education system (aside from Universities) we have 4 terms to a year starting in about February, with each term about 9 - 10 weeks and then about 2-3 weeks holiday between them, and a 6 week holiday after Term 4 which takes us into the new school year.

So, yesterday I just finished Term 1, and we have a 1 week holiday before Term 2. I got my class list for next term, and it looks like this:

For reference, the following things are required by Week 9 for each class:
  • Motion Graphics: Not sure, I've been told you have to produce several films, title sequences and Flash applications
  • Major Project: Entire design for a video game I must work on by myself, with a week-by-week blog, website and printed design document
  • ICT: Finished video game with a group of people, ready for PAX (this is the Part 2, you can see what I have so far in the Game Design megathread)
  • Character Design: Entire character from reference sketches to Mudbox sculpt, Maya optimised, UV'd and textured, rigged and with a short animation

My Internship job is to write articles for a website, which is fine but it takes between 5 - 10 hours to get these articles ready, and it can be upto 20 hours to create tutorial articles which pay better and are necessary once a month.

Am I forgeted?

do you procrastinate?
Yeah. I've started to use some programs to block Internet access, listening to more music that makes me productive and I'm spending more time at college where I'm focused, so I'm working a bit better now.

Try listening to Sim City's soundtracks. They're very calming and makes me productive.

Uh... It seems we have the same curriculum.

you have classes that are three and four hours long? is that normal?

It is in some colleges, mostly just depending on what you're taking.

I dunno how marks work in Australia but there's only so high you can get right? So if you need to only invest enough time to get the minimum for the best mark. Don't worry about going above and beyond because extra won't matter in the long run. Except for the internship, definitely go above and beyond for that!

It is when they only meet once or twice per week

wouldn't it be easier on students to meet more often, for less time? I'd certainly prefer that to sitting in one class for four hours

I'm stuck in class from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm with a total of 40 minutes recess partitioned trought the day and 1 hour to eat. I wouldn't complain about 5 hour classes.

Chemistry is very complex. Biology occupies a lot of time as well as laboratory.

For college probably, but for Universities and Primary/High Schools, no. I also generally stay back after hours since the teachers stay back so that I can get extra time for my practical work.

I really, really want to on the two games I'll be working on this term. I need to do something awesome with the character, because I already failed the first assessment and if I fail the class I don't graduate this year. Motion Graphics should be easy since it's mostly just messing around in After Effects and Flash, and my Internship is just writing articles which I might be able to pull off on weekends if I play my cards right.
