Author Topic: Free Shopping, boys  (Read 1018 times)

I was doing grocery store shopping for the coming two weeks. Usually racks up 200 EUR in groceries.
So this is at the store that I quit my job at because they're wankers, which is relevant in a face-rubbing aspect.
I was checking out, and this store has a policy where if you're 5th in line, with at least one of the 4 cash register inactive, you get the whole deal free.
I happened to be that guy, 190 EUR of groceries for free for me today.

The energy drinks have never tasted so sweet.

Now go back at buy 190 EUR worth of food

That's the weirdest deal I've ever heard

the whole damn store has weird deals like this. but this one specifically is so they can come over as ensuring that you'll never as a customer have to wait long before you get to pay for your items. it sometimes bites back - a friend of mine has had this earlier with 15 eur or something.

What if there's ten people in line with only one register open?
5 people get free food?
Seems like an easy way to lose a lot of money

5 registers open at once? Amazing. If only Wal-Mart could do that.

We have 9 open here usually

I guess our walmart just sucks. In a 75000 person town they can't even fill the registers worth a damn. People apply left and right from what I've found out.

What country do you live in? And is spending two hundred Euro's every two weeks considered to be a lot for groceries where you live?

Netherlands, and yeah i guess its a lot of money

Wait, 5 registers? None of the stores near me ever have more than 2 open at a time

€200 is £148 or $224.

According to this article, in the UK in 2014 (although this is Jan 2014, so it really reflects 2013), the average weekly shopping bill was £86 a week.
So you could assume an average bi-weekly shopping bill is around £172, which is now €232 or $260.

That's certainly a lot for 1 person, but is seemingly on average, at least for the UK.
Bear in mind though that this is about the average price 2 years ago, in a different country, and doesn't take into account inflation in that time, nor the drop in the worth of the Euro in recent months.

How many people do you shop for though? Also, any pets?

I just did a weeks shop (as a student mind you), for 1 person, for £30 ($45.50 USD/€40.50), including unnecessary snacks.
This didn't consist of much though, I suppose.
16 items total, including bread, milk, meats/meals, 4 snack items and frozen chips.

where I live we usually have 2 and 30 people waiting
