Author Topic: Atlantic Anchors - Circa 1660 - Now open to heads of governments!  (Read 5594 times)

It is 1660, and the world is connected under the fist of the West...
6 MONTHS PER DAY
But what will you do? Play as a captain of a ship - either a pirate, admiral, merchant, or privateer - or perhaps a mayor of one of the many colonial port cities, or even a defender of the natives or a soldier of the British, as the world undergoes a true revolution when five major powers emerge. Choose an alliance between the British, French, Dutch, Spanish, or Portuguese and set sail for the high seas as you embark upon your quest, whatever it may be.

I talked to Nonnel about his next nation RP, and it's possible (but not guaranteed) that it might take place during this time period. If so, I'll probably set this in the same universe so that actions in the nation RP will affect the map in this RP. Which will probably be fun. For now, the clock is frozen at 1660.

UPDATE: I got bored of waiting, so you can now apply as a king, PM, a governor,  or whatever. Time passes at 6mo/day.

Reference Map:

I know it's not very clear what each region is, so here is a link to the source map.

Empires:

British
Nation: British Commonwealth
Company: Honourable East India Company (HEIC, British East India Company)
Company-Nation Relationship: Chartered by the Queen, and owned their own colonies
It doesn't look like much now, but the British have colonies in North America, South America, the Caribbean, and on the Indian subcontinent.
They also assert a large amount of influence over India and Indonesia. They are in a war with the Spanish.
French
Nation: Kingdom of France
Company: Compagnie Française pour Commerce des Indes (CFCI, French East India Company)
Company-Nation Relationship: Chartered by the King
Although the French never created a significant empire, they do have colonies in North America and South America.
They also trade frequently in the East Indies, and are currently at war with the Spanish.
Dutch
Nation: Kingdom of the Netherlands
Company: Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC, Dutch East India Company)
Company-Nation Relationship: Chartered, but so powerful that they practically control the Dutch government
The Dutch government owns colonies all over the world, including North America, South America, and many in the East Indies.
The VOC is the first multinational corporation, and the Dutch are at war with the Spanish but are fairly unscathed; they have shaky relations with the Brits.
Spanish
Nation: Hapsburg Spain
Company: None (Spanish Armada)
Company-Nation Relationship: N/A; strong crown control and heavily influenced by the Church
What the Spanish lacks in an East India Company it more than makes up in its huge amount of territory. The original empire where the sun never sets,
Spain owns huge amounts of Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines. They are at war with the British and French.
Portuguese
Nation: Iberian Portugal
Company: None (despite an ill-fated attempt)
Company-Nation Relationship: N/A; heavily influenced by the Church, and to some extent, Spain
Much like Spain, the Portuguese are less mercantile but far more colonial. They own the Brazilian coast, islands in the East Indies, and, uniquely, colonies in Africa.
Interestingly, they have quite a peaceful relationship with Spain (despite intense rivalry) and were the first to attempt imperialism - and it worked quite well.
Pirate
Nation: Various, usually hated by governments
Company: N/A
This isn't really a true allegiance as pirates frequently fight each other, but they were common around the world during this time period.
They were especially common in the Caribbean, where they would attack ships to steal their goods; governments responded by hiring privateers to hunt them, legally,
for a large portion of the plunder. Some privateers eventually went rogue, though.
Other
Nation: Take your pick!
Company: Form your own!
If you don't like any of the above allegiances or just want to spice things up, you can pick anything else you want! Many other nations are open to you,
such as the powerful but non-colonial Chinese, generally isolationist Japanese, or less orthodox choices like Russia, Sweden, Denmark, or the Holy Roman Empire.
And if politics don't suit your fancy, you can always form your own company and convince other people to join you, or fight for natives around the globe.

Rules:

I'm generally pretty loose on rules, so as long as you're not an starfish, you'll probably be fine.
  • You cannot play as the head of government for one of the 5 major powers.
  • Be fair in your actions. Nobody likes a powergamer.
  • Don't RP for other people (godmodding.) When in a battle, I and I alone dictate the result.
  • Feel free to do whatever, but try not to isolate yourself from other players. Join fleets, trade with each other, fight each other, have fun!
  • You don't strictly have to stay in the Atlantic Ocean. The Indian Ocean gets pretty spicy during this time too.
  • Try to be as historically accurate as possible, but if you don't know better it's fine.
  • Don't be an idiot. If you are being an idiot, you can be kicked out of the RP. So don't.
  • Unless you're being the fun kind of idiot that loads cannons with maple syrup. You'll get yourself killed, but it'll be funny as hell.

Name: Sir Ridley Curtis
Nationality: England
Home Port: Huangzhou
Age and Gender: 24 M
Allegiance: Dutch/Chinese (loosely)
Class: Privateer
Physical Description: Short, black hair. 6' 2", moderately muscular.
Personal Bio: Born in England, grew up admiring the people who did boat things, and always wanted to be a captain when he grew up. Abducted in a pirate raid upon his small port town, he was raised as a pirate, learning the way of the rapier, backsword, and musket (tfw too early for rifles). Quickly ascended the ranks and took the position as captain at the young age of 21 and took his jolly pirates all the way to the Indian Ocean and contracts for the Dutch and Chinese killing pirates (I'm paid to have a double standard, forget you).

the territories aren't historically accurate but okay
they're just about accurate
according to this map anyway but it should be correct plus or minus 15 years

also it generally goes with occupied territory rather than declared territory; america isn't shown as independent until the british actually leave, not when they declare independence
are you going to join or nah

Sweet, someone other than a privateer
Accepted, although I suggest you to pick a more reasonable age. The British ask you to attack the Spaniards at Havana.

Could I have where I'm coming from(like north or south), and where the Spanish are?

The Spanish will be in Havana, Cuba, as it is their colony. You'll be coming from your port in the British North American colonies.

The boat Curtis is trailing approaches the Spanish Philippines.
