some may argue that it helps places like the united states gauge just how well their schools are doing to teach, while others criticize the standardized testing system for merely providing additional funding to schools which may not deserve it, among other things

some will say that standardized testing helps bring everyone onto an equal playing field while others may argue it interrupts true learning for some fake-ass memorization mantras

what do you think about standardized testing?

i feel glad that I dont have to do standardized tests anymore

State tests aren't generally used for anything other than statistics and funding. The fact that some departments allot more money to schools with better test scores is kind of silly, considering that the schools with worse test scores need it way more.

I disagree with the idea that standardized testing 'levels the playing field'. The SAT can really screw over ESL students aspiring to go to college in the US because they'll lose plenty of points in critical reading and writing, even if they're fluent in English and good in mathematics and all other school subjects. In order to accommodate that, many colleges accept the TOEFL, but even a good TOEFL score isn't enough to account for a lower SAT score (in the eyes of admissions officers).

However, I also disagree with the people who claim that the SAT is rout memorization. The only part of the SAT that can truly be considered memorization-based is the vocab portion of CR (which makes up a rather small part of that section anyway). The rest of it is a measurement of how much you've learned, and while a lot of the test relies on 'trick questions', it's not based on your ability to regurgitate facts.

I know a whole bunch of new jersey students opted out of the parcc test this last testing season (40-50k last I heard), kind of a testament to the number of kids who are tired of the standardized lifestyle

I will agree with seventh as for the sats though. I think it's really the only one that should be allowed/encouraged (along with the acts)

I usually try to pass on the word in my school that test scores don't matter.
They really don't.

This year, Arizona replaced its old state-administered test (AIMS) with something new to accommodate the common-core standards (AZmerit). So this year was just an experimental year to determine whether AZmerit's results are comparable to AIMS' results. That meant that I didn't have to take it since I wasn't taking any of the regular classes that the test targets  :cookieMonster:

They aren't that bad if you study.

You would have taken the AIMS for nothing regardless. As long as you don't fail it, you get to graduate. That's the only reason you take it, lol.

I really dont like standardized testing merely because of the fact that we end up doing these huge tests that completely ignore what we do for the standardized tests

They are poorly made, but also certainly have their place.

Ridiculous. In school all they do is teach you what will be on the test and say 'we are preparing you for the real world' sure, when I use quadratic equation I'll tell you. Only one teacher actually taught us how to real world. And he got fussed at for it.

well the az merit algebra was hard because half the things on it is stuff i forgot how to do ;-;
