The only reason it sucks is because it assumes each angle is equally easy for your hand to access, hence the circular design. That's not true. Negative angles (towards your palm) are much more difficult to access than positive angles, which is why the current 3-key layout allows for the mildest angles and thus mildest demand on your fingers. Now, as far as the layout goes, there's plenty of innovation on that topic and keyboards that are supposed to make you 'type faster.' This is probably possible by putting more used keys in easier to access places, and less used keys in harder to access places. After all, B and Y are probably the hardest two keys to access on the keyboard (assuming you're typing properly) and they are used much more frequently than, say, X and Z.
