Author Topic: Online sales tax help  (Read 908 times)

So I'm trying to figure out what the tax would be for a $450 purchase from the Microsoft online store (I'm in Missouri), but you have to like enter all your payment info which I'm not gonna get my parents to do to figure out tax.

Can someone tell me how online tax works? Is it just the state's base tax (like 4.225% or something here)?

Please help me!

did a quick google search and it looks like you might not even have to pay sales tax

no that's the base rate. Individual municipalities then add on to that, so it's usually around 8-9%.

hmmm, I somehow doubt that. They have a store here in STL so I should have to pay tax.

How exactly are you paying the online tax? You're supposed to pay sales taxes on online purchases when you file taxes. Though they don't really do anything to check. I have never had to do more than just give my address to get a sales tax, or be told I might need to pay additional taxes.

It's just added to the cost of the item on the website.

It would look something like this.

Total before tax: $600.00
Tax:                   $26.00
Total:                 $626.00

I usually don't have to pay taxes online. I guess it depends on the website you shop on/what state it's shipping from.

The general rule here is Missouri is if there's a physical store in the state, then you need to pay tax. There's a Microsoft store here in Saint Louis, so I should have to pay tax, I think.
