Half the people in this thread probably don't know the full history of the flag. And they probably think that the civil war was based 100% only on racism and slavery.
it was only really 90% based around slavery, that is true

lol

and the whole confederate-rebel-redneck-southern mentality thing is dumb
flying the confederate flag is basically flying a middle finger to the rest of the country

yeah it was about states rights
to own slaves..............

should be banned from state flags and government institutions

States' rights.  Slavery was the issue where it came to a head, but the underlying issue was definitely states' rights.

First of all the stars and bars is General Lee's battle flag, not the Confederate national flag.
If we're going to ban that, ban the national socialist, Imperial Japanese, and Soviet flags as well.  Foreign powers that warred with the United States and were founded upon evil ideals.

Freedom of speech allows you to be as offensive as you like as long as you're not creating a public danger, yelling fire in a movie theater type thing.  To undercut such a fundamental because some tribal bozo shot up a church should be unthinkable.  Tyranny of the majority is still tyranny, even if the minority is tribal or whatever.

i don't think anyone's arguing for it to be banned (from non-government entities)
just that it's stuffty

should be banned from state flags and government institutions
yeah

Yeah it's pretty much recognized as a tribal symbol
But displaying it is free speech

Again his statement confirmed that that was the case when it came to a head. Human rights are important and i'm glad that slavery is abolished. However the war was also majorly on the issue of big government and allowing the federal government to strong-arm states into doing what they wanted the state to do. It's just always assumed that the South fought only for slavery and based on that alone. Narrow vision in history is the result of who won the war naturally. You only see tribal confederate soldiers in Hollywood.

even so, it seems a bit drastic and handicapped to start a war over that
there's a reason the country is democratic; if you failed the vote, you failed the vote. deal with it.

Democratic Republic*

Also large government isn't something menial and petty. Everything comes with its consequences. Otherwise hundreds of soldiers wouldn't have been so keen on warring over it anyhow.

uh no its not

this is the stars and bars

this is the battle flag

"Majorly"

The southern states literally did not give two stuffs about what the government did or was doing until Abraham Lincoln was voted into office. It's funny that even when Abraham Lincoln came into officer there were no overt Congressional actions against slavery that banned it in any state of the Union.

The Declaration of Secession of South Carolina states:
Quote
But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them.

This was not a conflict with the government, according to South Carolina, but it was a conflict between the policies of the various Northern States that "nullify the Acts of Congress," those acts being the Fugitive Slave Act and others that were in fact supporting slavery. More clearly, the Declaration of Secession of South Carolina states that

Quote
A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. He is to be entrusted with the administration of the common Government, because he has declared that that "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free," and that the public mind must rest in the belief that slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction. This sectional combination for the submersion of the Constitution, has been aided in some of the States by elevating to citizenship, persons who, by the supreme law of the land, are incapable of becoming citizens; and their votes have been used to inaugurate a new policy, hostile to the South, and destructive of its beliefs and safety.

It seems that the reason South Carolina seceded was because of slavery.

lol banning symbols. what country are you actually from that you think that is a thing?
