Author Topic: Who here dislikes trans people?  (Read 51471 times)

Damn, this went to stuff pretty fast.

It's a simply a question, you just had to say yes or no.

Why did all this arguing happen?

Have you ever seen a thread on this forum not turn into an argument?

Good point!

Yay Blockland Forums! :D

Ask for somebody to come out and say they have an opinion that is mostly frowned upon in this community. Grand idea! I'm sure no arguing will be involved.

But, no opinion was asked for? Only an answer to the question?

I think if someone would go so far as to get body-altering surgery and hormone therapy, or even to simply present as a gender different to the love they were born with, despite the social stigma and bigotry they may have to face, it's impossible to say they are doing it for attention. Trans people are more likely to be killed or commit Self Delete, more likely to be shunned by their friends and family.

Don't even get me started in this mental disorder crap. Entertaining that notion, how do you propose it be dealt with? Don't you think the nutjob Christians who shove their kids into conversion therapy would have found some effective treatment? Yet they haven't. So even pretending it's a mental illness (you'd find the APA disagrees) it'd be better to alleviate the symptoms than use ineffective "treatment"

haha, yikes, that is naïve

it was miraculously agreed upon several pages ago that is indeed a mental illness, even if you think it's of a benign variety

Pretty sure the standard practice is to do both. First attempt psychotherapy and see if they can learn to appreciate who they are, and if that doesn't work, then you start the whole reassignment thing.

What makes you so sure someone would actually make irreversible changes to their body just for the sake of attention.

But, no opinion was asked for? Only an answer to the question?
True, but I don't expect a blatant yes from such a heavy opinion like this. In this case people are going to want to explain themselves.

...why not? people do some incredibly stupid stuff for attention all the time, ie. die

haha, yikes, that is naïve
why would someone put themselves through all that stuff for attention? there are much easier ways of getting it that don't require changing the structure of your body

A psychological state is considered a mental disorder only if it causes significant distress or disability. Many transgender people do not experience their gender as distressing or disabling, which implies that identifying as transgender does not constitute a mental disorder.

Actually I forgot about that, yeah they do do psychotherapy before. Point is the psychotherapy doesn't change anything in many (most?) cases, evidenced by all the post-op trans people and post-HRT trans people that exist. The psychotherapy is a filter, not a treatment.

I forgot to put that second response in a quote block. That's a quote.

don't feel like going through all the pages, but it was established and already agreed upon to the contrary, feel free to go see if you care enough
