Author Topic: I HATE (some kinds of) DRUMS  (Read 3970 times)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6lWjL_nO-c this song would be complete stuff without drums

Do you even music.
maybe you should learn to change your whole dnb operation to just bass
This song is already on my list, and it's a good example of drums done well. The unobtrusive volume and low pitch make it acceptable, though the way the beat cuts out after an 1/8th note is irritating. Even so, I have to say that I enjoyed the parts without drums the most.
The beats at the beginning (0:30 - 1:00) are an excellent demonstration of the despicably earsplitting kicks I hate.

Here's an example of a song that does well in the department of drum sound.

Despite being extremely heavy on the bass, the kick is low and resonant - not infuriatingly high or short.
I used to play trombone in a concert band, and I sat directly in front of the cymbals. Eventually I just took to balancing my instrument on my shoulders and covering my ears with my hands whenever a large crash came up, because I couldn't loving handle the volume.
after reading this whole thread and then this comment i really can't tell what type of drums you're chastising and what ones you're okay with. i'd even say the one you linked has less variation and is more repetitive than ipq's song. if you removed drums from like any electro song it would lose most of its energy and go from a dance song to some other genre of music i dont even know what to call.

drums are there to keep the rhythm going even if everything is already in sync. also without drums a lot of bass parts you think are already punchy would have a lot less punch if there wasn't a snare or kick drum behind it

to truly appreciate drums, search for a MIDI of your favourite song, and remove the percussion tracks

I want to make this absolutely clear, because I notice that around half of you decided to take the title literally and completely ignore the OP. I'll just give you the important part.

More elaboration: The specific kind of drums I hate the most are the higher-pitched kicks, especially short or cut-off ones. A good and resonate kick around 60 Hz is ideal for me, but if a song is full of beats that last under 1/8th note at 250 Hz, especially if they're louder than the rest of the song, I tend to end up with red streaks on the side of my head.

I hope this should clear things up. I don't hate all drums as some of you seem to think think, and "I HATE DRUMS THAT ARE EXCEPTIONALLY LOUD, DON'T RESONATE FOR MORE THAN 1/8TH NOTE, OR ARE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN 60 HZ" wouldn't make for a very good topic title. I was wrong to assume that everyone would read the OP.

Still, songs without drums sound like they would be better as an 8-bit melody. Sometimes drums are what make a song "music".

Is there some other kind of interpretation of the thread title? Obviously if people read the OP they'd know, but they aren't. The easier solution than complaining and calling everyone stupid is to just change the title.

lol what does this even mean

sometimes short punchy kicks are what sound best for the song. like i probably wouldn't use one on a downtempo song but i would probably use one on something with a higher bpm and punchy bass instruments. idk man its all subjectory

drums and base are the like 2 instruments that hold things down come on
