forum fad is a posh way of saying forum meme

what the f
no, where did I say that? mlp is a fad because it has a group sharing enthusiasm about it
Clearly you didn't read the rest of my post:

A fad refers specifically to something short lived
MLP:FIM has been a thing for just about 5 years now, that's not really "short lived"

The word you're looking for for "group sharing enthusiasm about it" is "fandom"

ok, but I didn't think it was a fad because people hated it like you seem to think, which is just wrong

just because I didn't quote it doesn't mean I didn't read it, by the way, I was just giving the actual reason for me calling it a fad

A fad is much like a trend, it's an intense and widely shared craze about some sort of topic that's defined by being short-lived. A fandom isn't a fad.

A good example of a fad would be 90s mullets. Everyone had one for a short amount of time, then the fad died out and nobody liked it anymore.

jack off and leave is the best fad

where did I even say this
No one has said it explicitly, it's just a common theme I've noticed on this forum, where people (in general, not specifically you) dismiss popular things they don't like as a "fad"

just because I didn't quote it doesn't mean I didn't read it, by the way, I was just giving the actual reason for me calling it a fad
"It's a fad because x"
"It's not a fad because it does not meet criteria y of the definition of fad"
"It's a fad because x"
"You must not have read my reasoning why it's not a fad"

Clearly a very dumbed down and paraphrased turn of events, but I said you didn't read because you essentially just repeated yourself and posted something that directly contradicts it without a reason as to why I'm wrong.

OT: the current thing seems like a regular poll would work fine. Unless you're trying to have some fun with the elimination style thing? Idk it just feels like it makes the process of deciding what to do next take more time.

well alright, just don't think that I personally said that out of hate or anything, that's all I'm asking for you to acknowledge

That makes you wonder how long something can last and still be considered a fad.

In your example of the mullet, it lived for nearly a decade as a prominent fashion fad.
It wouldn't be considered a fad if it were still as popular today however.

So, when we have something like MLP, and we're saying it's not a fad because it is 5 years old now, is that enough to say it's not a fad?
If the fandom of it dropped dead by the end of the year, and there was little following of it thereafter, would it be acceptable to call it a fad fandom, even if it was a long-lived one?

My point is, is a fad specifically short-lived, or is it just something that was popular but no longer is?
And if the latter is the case, do we consider things like bowler hats to be a fad, because they were popular and now aren't? But they were popular from the 1840s well into the 1970s.

well alright, just don't think that I personally said that out of hate or anything, that's all I'm asking for you to acknowledge
Fair enough. Implying that wasn't really what I intended.

snips
I guess the amount of time necessary is subjective. But either way, it doesn't seem honest to call something a fad if you don't know that's what it's going to be.

On the other hand, though, I don't think I've ever heard the word "fad" used (with the exception of this forum dismissing things it doesn't like) outside the context of fashion, since it's a very varying thing. Hell, all the examples both you and Ike used were fashion related

I think a lot of the people calling it a fad are doing it out of hope that that's what it will be, that it'll die soon so they won't have to see it anymore (cuz god knows how horrible it is that someone likes something that someone else doesn't).

Can we save the discussing of fads until we actually have a poll about fads please?

It's primarily used for fashion, yeah.

But I've also seen it used for sports/games before.
Hula-hooping was a fad in the 50's, which was short-lived, and things like Rainbow Looms have also been described as fads.

Other than that I really only see it used here, in regards to specific in-jokes/short-term events, particularly having specific avatars.
And even then, I see that less and less. I reckon that back in 2008/9/10, "fad" was used a lot, especially for anything avatar or photoshop related. Like the Cookie Monster fad, pine-tree joke, Warren's face, or that picture of hugums.
I think that in recent years the word has been subverted by the use of the word "meme", particularly in relation to photo-edits.

No.
If you'd like to discuss something else here in the meantime, then feel free to do so.
But if you don't like the discussion then don't look at it. You can't police what people are talking about.

bird or glasses avatar fad was best fad
