At the risk of being attacked en masse by people promoting stupid polls, I agree with the OP. The point of a poll is to collect data from the population, and by adding irrelevant and duplicate options like the second example poll skews the data to be completely unusable. Which makes the poll essentially spam on the lead topic page.

they're dumb, yes, but not worth making a drama over. it won't change anything. every new user is going to try out the poll function when they make a topic and 9 times out of 10 they're going to add a bunch of stupid options
they're not going to see this topic. they're not going to search the forums to find out whether or not their poll hijinks are cause for dismay. they're going to do it and you'll be yelling at the wall.
