video editing software?

I've been thinking about getting some video editing software on my computer. Sometimes I make stupid little stuff on my iPhone with iMovie for iOS, but I am severely limited by it. Even though I am comfortable with iMovie, I cannot download it for Windows and I am not going out of my way to do so.

Is there any software anyone can recommend? Price doesn't matter, as long as there is at least some kind of demo or something. Just want to be able to do simple stuff like overlay video with images.

i know i can probably get a demo or something, but what exactly is after effects? not sure, even after reading over a bit of the page.

i've seen premier pro as an app, it was horribly basic but i guess it was just something to allow them to say something along the lines of "use the app, finish on your computer blah blah blah"

unfortunately paint.net isn't open-source :(
a great alternative to that or even photoshop is GIMP, which is open-source
but it's a lot less lightweight than paint.net, so I still tend to use pdn for the stuff it's capable of
