Author Topic: Questioning Video Game Logic  (Read 5750 times)

/title

We know they're video games. We know they have their own logic. But why the forget does it work that way?

Why is is that if a damsel in Spelunky falls from a high height, landing does nothing, but when you do it, you take damage and get stunned?

Where do bottomless pits even lead in Mario? Do they abruptly end with spikes at the bottom, but you can't see it?

If Sonic "rolls around at the speed of sound", how have the police not arrested him, and how has he not broken the sound barrier several times during his games?

1: OP nerf pls
2: The core of the planet in this dystopian future. Parasites drilled their way down there.
3: Because Sonic is a liar.

If Sonic "rolls around at the speed of sound", how have the police not arrested him, and how has he not broken the sound barrier several times during his games?

Oh come on, those are just song lyrics.

But why the forget does it work that way?
Because the action logic is more important than the scientific justifications. So long as the rules work in the player's head and remain consistent, all is good in the world.

Why does Heavy Weapons Guy from Team Fortress 2 instantly regain all of his health while eating a sandvich?

That's the equivalent of me being stabbed in the gut with a sword, and chowing down on some PBJ and BAM, I'm back

I mean, does it have a little medigun inside?

And how do those work?

In FPS games, Do allied NPCs actually do any damage when shooting or are they just there for decoration
Ive always wondered this while playing a Halo game
"I seem to be mowing down baddies by myself but do my marines actually help or are those gunshots fake"

In almost all FPS games, your AI buddies will do the work for you and on easier difficulty settings you can actually just sit back and leave them to clear the room out. They do that so they can put in harder/more enemies and make a more challenging scenario for you.

In games like the LEGO adaptational games, your AI buddies either do no damage (The LEGO Star Wars games) or will kill everybody except the last person in the room (and then they stand around, which looks absolutely hilarious).

because that only happens when you roll around faster than the speed of sound

Why can't I jump from a ladder into a table in WWE 2k15? I just fall through the table every time

Collision is difficult, expensive and unpredictable.

That and TF2 doesn't even try to be logical. If a thing works, it's just because it does. Not quite the right thing to question in this kind of thread otherwise it'll be littered with people picking apart all the games that were made to be silly and unrealistic.
