My house and apartment have the automatic standby generators that go on as soon as the power goes out, but they both came like that. I probably wouldn't ever buy one of those myself though. My parents have one of the portable gas powered ones, but it has 8 outlets on it so they can at least use stuff like the shower, tvs, etc.
