West Germany begins developing a new jet fighter to replace their increasingly outdated aircraft inventory (blame the americans for not supplying any jets when requested), the goal of the project is to build a relatively low cost, easily-maintained, and flexible combat aircraft through the reduction of parts complexity. It will take advantage of air-to-air missile technology while still retaining the ability to effectively maneuver in a dogfight situation. The primary role of this new jet will be to perform air-to-air roles and reconnaissance; however, an interceptor version will also be built with no consideration for parts commonality, as that will ultimately hurt whatever design is churned out.
