My school was right near a pretty serious gang area so they were extremely strict. No hats at all, not even beanies in winter when it was chilly. No professional sports team jerseys or shirts (especially not chargers, lakers, or raiders). They would question people if a group of kids were all wearing the same colors. My area was split pretty much in half between really nice communities full of young families and old people and areas where people would get stabbed and deal meth and what have you.
