Author Topic: How can we actually grow the game?  (Read 1233 times)

I mean, get more traffic in the game. I recently started playing blockland but there barely are any players.
Ofcourse you can advertise the game on some website but thats might cost allot of money (badspot has alt money anways, he can do it, I think.)
You can also run a contest on some site. People who didn't win might actually be interested.
What else we can do is make a megathread on some other forum about blockland, idk.
Remember when there was a summer sale and holy stuff we had tons of players? A discount or free weekend might also get more traffic.

What do you think?

Well I think what is keeping players away is the lack of servers, I mean there are some good servers like Boss battles and Nobot's zombie server, but when someone hosts something really unique and good, they eventually give up on it because they don't have time or some other reason, I think maybe people should start hosting different servers, maybe a new jail escape, not the same old Tezuni's one, also an RPG would be nice, one that you can actually understand and play.

I totally agree. While some servers are very fun to play (like falling platforms, love it!) after a while they get really repetetive. The problem with RPG's is you have to build everything by hand and that takes quite a while. Ofcourse there are terrain gens but they are buggy af. I tried making RPG's (I once had a post-apoc RPG, was fun to play imo) but after I tried expanding it not even 10 mins later I gave up.
My RPG was linear-ish tho. Open worlds are even harder to do.

At this time of course the master server is empty. It's the middle of the night in US. In the evenings and early mornings for me (European) there's plenty to do.

If badspot will release another big update (like fixing lighting and vehicles) this would help us.

me and a bunch of people where discussing this subject on heed's server yesterday. The only way you can get the game more views and players is by advertisement and a big issue with indie games today is the fact that they don't get a lot of attention, most of it is due to the fact we have a bunch of youtube lets players advertising games like fnaf. With that issue its difficult to get more players, another thing we could do is make more youtube videos because people like me had watched blockland videos like this one and this one and instantly got convinced into buying the game because of how it looked and how it was presented to us. I think that if we made more videos then it could do something I mean what are most people doing nowadays anyway? majority of people today just watch youtube and spend a lot of time on it. We could also ask a popular youtuber like videogamedunkey to play blockland and that would get some players

there's nothing "we" can do
badspot could try advertising, but that's not gonna do any good either
plenty of people try the game. you can tell because there are almost 200,000 IDs
but nobody sticks around. because the game honestly gets kinda boring for most people. it's a pretty niche game
the people who do continue to play, it's either because they're interested in building or eventing (which requires specific kinds of people), or they've made remarkably good friends here
the little minigames people host aren't enough to keep people playing for years, or even months. the majority of the players it might gain with a free weekend would be gone by the end of the weekend

Some games grow because it has a large community. So there is something "we" can do. Like I said before do a giveaway if sombody has a large enough youtube/twitch or whatever.
Its not about all the players leaving after the free weekend, its a about gaining peoples attention in the game, let them try it out and let them get interested and possibly buy it.

these are pipe dreams. the game's not going to get a lot of new long-term players, no matter what you or anyone else does
it's not that it's a bad game. but it's just not that interesting to most people. a youtube video won't change that

A few ideas:

1. Make or help make a gamemode. I will literally start making an RPG right now if someone were to actually do models for it.
2. Play the game. Even if a server has substantially low number of players, try and get the server going by hanging out in it for a while. A lot of good hosts stop hosting because they never pick up.
3. Be more active in the positive sections that actually relate to Blockland. (General discussion, gallery, help, s&r, coding help, mod disc, gen modding help, add-ons, environments (other sections are substantially less important. except maybe a select few good clans)
4. Promote in-game positivity. Don't be an ass to specific users just because others do it. If anyone is causing an issue, then an admin should deal with it.
5. Promote better administration standards. Don't give admin to people for things that don't even remotely relate to being a good admin. Poor reasons to give people admin include but aren't limited to: being a friend, good builder, etc. I'm not saying don't trust your friends and your builders, just, make sure you know that they're actually going to be a good admin, like you would for anyone else. Admin status is a responsibility, not a treat.

Things Badspot could do:
Workshop support.
A reliable and straightforward method for steam users to host dedicated servers.
A method for steam users to host remote dedicated servers.
Improve the gamemode system. It could really use more features to it. Like when starting up a server, provide the option to add additional add-ons to the gamemode, as well as give people who make gamemodes the option of, well, adding options to the gamemode. Without slash commands. Like, while setting up a server, you pick the DM gamemode someone made, but you want to change the score limit, or the time limit, or something, that should be in the "Start a Game" interface, or a series of prompts on a dedicated. It just feels like too much extra work making a packaged gamemode, getting less customization from it, just for the slight ease of being able to choose it at the start server menu and having it show up on the master server.
Give a reason to even download faces/decals other than taking screenshots or making videos. There really isn't a point in using a downloaded face/decal in normal play because no one's ever going to see it. 90%+ of the time, you're looking at the back of your player so you don't see it. Everyone else just sees a blank decal and the default face.

You are talking about its one video and  one day and BOOM! tons of new players. Im talking over a long period of time. Like by next year (i mean 10/11/2016, not 1/1/2016) the average playercount doubled.

Iirc there already are a few rpg things and you can use VCE for it but if you can manage to make a decent and easy to use one it would certainly arise cooler server you can play over a long period of time.

I think badspot isnt going to invest any money in advertising the game. But He has to add workshop support and steam dedicated servers.

Typed with phone. Dont mind the typos

Stop right there. I said I am looking for a modeller. I am fully capable of scripting it. You cannot make models with VCE.

all you need is good/entertaining/fun/other good terms servers to be hosted constantly and
a bunch of big-name youtubers or other video game players to play it at a nice time

getting servers is hard enough though

i hosted for a streamer with about 300 viewers once but he doesn't have blockland sadly

By watering it.

Well, I'd say by hosting servers which are actually fun and not random things.

But random things can be very fun. I remember how shockwave battles were a thing. It began by screwing around in a freebuild with shockwaves.

Moral of the story: screw around with random bullstuff until something funny comes up and use it as an idea for a server.
