If it doesn't state in the student handbook that males can't wear female clothing and females can't wear male clothing then i think his parents should get involved. There is no reason he was sent home, it wasn't a violation of dress code, and I don't see how it could be a distraction, unless I can be convinced otherwise by your fellow students and school administration that they are a bunch of ignorant idiots (which they probably are). Gender is not loving binary. The way you look at the world or view yourself doesn't have to be dictated by a dumb scientific definition.
There's no "either you are or aren't x" in this case. How one chooses to identify is up to them, and it's not your place to say whether it's 'handicapped' to do so.
