Near the milky way....?
Yeah, that's kind of a misleading description.
It's within the milky way, just like we are.
However, if you were to stand outside and look at the stars, you'd find it above the area we call 'the milky way', which is our view of the main-body of our galaxy, from within one of its arms.
KIC 8462852, the star in question, is in the same spiral arm of the galaxy as we are.
