Author Topic: Can uTorrent forget up your browser?  (Read 2010 times)

So I downloaded a torrent that I'm 99% sure was safe (it was from a verified publisher), and I also got uTorrent. Anyway, I torrented the file, and after that I decided to uninstall uTorrent. However, after I did Chrome stopped working, and now I can't open it. Did uTorrent in some way forget up my browser? I can use Firefox just fine, but I can't open Chrome.

download qBittorent, it's uTorrent but without the stuffty stuff

No. uTorrent would not directly forget up your browser. Did you install some kind of toolbar whilst installing uTorrent?

What happens when you try to open it? Does nothing happen, is there an error?

nope, it tried to get me to install some random stuff, but i declined

nothing happens, it tries to load but then gives up apparently. when i go to task manager i can see instances of chrome running though

Normally torrenting programs do nothing but...torrent. If anything I'm willing to bet it was something you torrented. It's also possible that uTorrent had some kind of toolbar or plugin that just didn't uninstall correctly.

Try reinstalling chrome.

Edit: Maybe you got a bad install of uTorrent?
I've never heard of it "trying to install other things".

Open taskmanager and stop all remainig chrome stuffd and try again

I'd suggest uninstalling uTorrent and getting Deluge. http://deluge-torrent.org/ It's got all the same features and no ads or shady stuff.
Also reinstall chrome.

I only torrented one thing, and it was from the Raspberry pi website, which I'm 99% sure doesn't give malware

Also Chrome just opened, but after like 20 minutes of trying

I mean the install wizard offered to include downloads of some random programs, but it was optional

Are you sure you got a legit installation of uTorrent?
forgeters like to hide stuff in program installers sometimes.
Like Bing......

Oh uh, remove that link.
Not sure on Baddys piracy polocies.

Last resort, I'd run anti malware and anti virus programs to clean up anything that might be there and reinstall Chrome if the problem continues past a restart.

Torrenting is a legitimate way of getting many kinds of software, like linux installations and stuff for raspberry pi's as OP mentioned. It's not inherently bad, and won't get removed.

The "No Piracy" rule on the Games board says otherwise though.
Not sure how far that rule bleeds.
