WHAT IS THIS?

The reason this thread exists is two fold: 1. For me to collect data on where the forums stands on various political issues and 2. To raise consciousness and political comprehension for the everyday child/teen/adult on here as best I can.

(chances are the issues I present and how I present them will revolve somewhat around the United States, so please be aware)


HOW'S IT GONNA WORK?

I'll post 3 issues pertaining to a specific category for your guys to discuss and voice an opinion on. Just make a post in this thread of your stances to be counted. If you wish to elaborate on what you believe and why you believe in it, I would appreciate it.

Questions in blue at the end of each subsection will be the ones I'm looking out for, so please make sure to at least touch upon them.

After I've received a decent number of responses on the current set of issues, I'll compile the results and toss in another rotation for you guys to give your two cents on. Sound fun?

ON THE SUBJECT OF: IMMIGRATION ISSUES

Today we'll be handling immigration issues--that is to say, issues relating to immigrant emigration, xenophobia, and constitutionality.


BORDER SECURITY

The border between Mexico and the United States is nearly two-thousand miles in length (over three-thousand kilometers). Of this border is the American-owned, operated, and supervised half--the only half to it, actually. Mexico does not maintain a border with the United States. The refugee crCIA in Europe is bringing up new issues across the pond as well in places like Germany, Hungary, and the United Kingdom as to how secure their borders should be to prevent immigrants from entering, whether it be legally or illegally. As per usual, there are two positions:

PRO-STRONGER BORDER SECURITY PLANKS:
- prevents immigrants from entering illegally
- prevents immigrants from smuggling paraphernalia like drugs in
- reduces the number of new immigrants occupying jobs
- gives displaced Mexicans nowhere else to turn, thus catalyzing reform in Mexico

ANTI-STRONGER BORDER SECURITY PLANKS:
- costs an exorbitant amount of money to construct, maintain, and monitor
- if immigrants still get past after consolidating the border, it invalidates the entire project
- immigrants will just find new modes into the country
- we should help Mexico with their problem instead of blocking it out

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on border security? Do you think the government should make it stronger, weaker, or leave it the same? What kind of border security measures do you think are appropriate to employ?


BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution reads as follows: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." This clause has led to a phenomenon known as anchor babies, in which illegal immigrants have a child in the United States, thus making them a citizen, and guaranteeing its parents amnesty so they can care for said child. The recent influx of Mexican immigrants has sparked debates on whether this amendment should remain as-is, or if it should be revised so that only children of legal citizens receive citizenship.

PRO-BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP PLANKS:
- decreases illegal immigration numbers (people are less inclined to travel in family units)
- increases the population of the affected nation
- does not require another amendment
- reduces stress on government-subsidized functionaries like healthcare

ANTI-BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP PLANKS:
- allows anchor baby-ship
- making a distinction of parent citizenship would open up a new can of worms
- preserves the cultural identity of the affected nation
- removes incentive to cross borders if citizenship can't be option through a loophole

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on birthright citizenship? Do you think that children of illegal immigrants should be given citizenship, or not? Do you think children should receive birthright citizenship only if their parents are citizens?


CULTURAL ASSIMILATION

Cultural assimilation is when an immigrant adopts the customs and language of their new residence. The United States does not have a national language, although English is understandably the benchmark. The influx of Spanish-speakers has diluted many previously English-dominated environments, leading to a large language barrier between employers and their employees, or other scenarios.

PRO-CULTURAL ASSIMILATION PLANKS:
- improves communication between all involved
- reduces the chances of grief or incident from differing cultures/religions
- creates stronger sense of fraternity
- preserves the cultural independence of the affected nation

ANTI-CULTURAL ASSIMILATION PLANKS:
- increases violence due to lack of tolerance for foreign cultures/religions
- sacrifices the uniqueness of a foreign culture
- increases xenophobia
- makes populace more narrow-minded; it only supports cultural homogeny instead cultural heterogeny

My questions to you, OT, are these: Where do you stand on cultural assimilation? Do you think immigrants should culturally assimilate to the nation they're entering, or not? Do you think people of different cultures should totally abandon the nuances of their old culture (Mexicans don't eat Mexican food or celebrate Day of the Dead, for example)?

1- I am anti gun control because the only thing making guns illegal does is prevent people from defending themselves. Criminals don't follow laws so why would they follow these ones?

2-After thinking about it I am pro legalization but I think there should be restrictions as with what exists with cigarettes. Can't smoke a joint anywhere you want.

3-Dafuq is this stuff? Hell no I don't support it. If I am better qualified for a job I should get it over someone who is mexican instead of them saying no because the other guy is less fortunate.

I support increased gun control, more specifically the banning of selling concealable weapons and oversized rifles/heavy weapons like rocket launchers, flame throwers, etc. to citizens, but I don't see any harm in them being a collectors item that you like to have around the house for show (like sword collectors do), also backgrounds checks are a must too.

Where do you stand on drug policy? Do you support the decriminalization of drugs, or the continued prohibition on them? Do you support the illegal status of marijuana?

I don't think heroin, cocaine and any other harmful drugs should be legalised for recreational use. I don't support smoking in public places either/around children. I do support legalising weed for older ages, somewhere between 18-21.

no. I didn't go to school for 1/3 of my life for qualifications just to get turned down for someone less qualified because "diversity!"

Huge edit: I should probably elaborate more on my stances

1) Gun Control

   1A: Increased background checks so mentally insane people can't get guns
   1B: Increased
   1C: Oh forget no

Restriction of guns has been proven to lower killings (by guns). Look at loving Australia.

2) Drug Policy
  
   2A: Non-dangerous drugs (like weed) should be legalized, I see no real issue to the otherwise
   2B: Non-dangerous drugs (like weed) should be legalized, I see no real issue to the otherwise
   2C: No I don't

Non-dangerous drugs should be legalized

3) Affirmative Action

   3A: forget it up the ass with a splintery wooden pogo-stick
   3B: I'm against the use of them
   3C: Let's say you went to college to get a degree in architecture. Then you got the degree, and you went to get a job as an architect, and there was some mexican who didn't go to college, didn't get a degree in it, but who also wanted the job. If he got the job on the grounds of "Oh, well, this line of work needs more diversity" Would you be extremely pissed of?

1. Gun Control

I'm for increased background checks and evaluations of individuals before purchasing their firearms. I feel that the existing restrictions on fully fully automatic weapons is adequate as the paperwork and hoops required to just get one is deterring enough. I don't believe in restricting the access of weapons to civilians fully. My primary concern is not necessarily defense against criminals but mainly against a government should things go sour in the political spectrum. This isn't paranoia this is based off of the history of positions of power and the eventual abuse of said power.

2. Drugs

I feel like the heavy restriction on natural drugs needs to cease. I feel that they can be handled like we already handle cigarettes and alcohol and are a self resolving issue with the restrictions removed.

3. Diversity

No shortcuts. I don't think your race should give you any advantages over another individual. Thats completely against what America is suppose to be about. Anything that blatantly alienates one man or woman over another only causes severe issues.

2. Close and fortify the border, too many rapists and drug dealers are getting in
3. I love the Mexicans. Granted they're rapists and drug dealers. Some, I assume are good people

I'm not going to comment on Gun Control, because it's not an issue in the UK, and I don't have all the facts for the US. I also don't believe that the US will ever meaningfully increase gun control across the country, because it's a right you've had for so long.

Drug Policy
Where do you stand on drug policy?
I believe the continued criminalisation of narcotics and dangerous drugs should continue, and expand as new drugs are created.
Do you support the decriminalization of drugs, or the continued prohibition on them?
I support the continued prohibition of drugs. The large majority of criminalised drugs are dangerous and detrimental to society.
Do you support the illegal status of marijuana?
I support the illegal status of cannabis, although it's not a pressing concern to keep it illegal.
I don't believe the health benefits claimed are tested well enough, and even if they were, I don't believe they are reason for the drug to be used recreationally.

While not a merit for passing laws, I personally don't appreciate the culture around cannabis, and, although only being my own personal experience, I have never met a cannabis user who has been pleasant to be around.

Where do you stand on affirmative action programs?
I'm not fully up to date with this topic, as I'm not sure of its scope within the UK.
On the whole I do not believe it is acceptable for someone to be hired purely because of their race, religion, loveuality, gender or disability status, whether they are a minority or not.
I believe that people should be hired based on their merit as an employee.

I do believe that there should be some assistance to help those from underpriviledged communities gain access to education and employment, but I'm not sure of how that should be performed.
Simply hiring a person on account of their minority status, just to fill a quota of a workforce with members of that minority, is not right.

As it currently stands, I am against them.
Do you support the concept of equal opportunity measures like these?
My first point covers my understanding of how equal opportunity should be ensured.


ANTI-DRUG DECRIMINALIZATION PLANKS:
- drugs are illegal for a reason; they are harmful and should not be available for civilian use
- decriminalizing drugs would mean an addicted population
- would drastically increase drug use and crime
- would invalidate the War on Drugs
- opening drug rehabilitation centers would cost more money than drug taxes would bring in
I know you're not really arguing these but I'll still address them for anyone who does think them.

Also I'm addressing these specifically referring to marijuana because that's what everyone is fighting for legalization of

1. There are drugs that are currently legal that are more harmful and addictive
2. People already do drugs. Also, see the "more addictive" part of answer one.
3. I'm pretty sure the results of the couple states who have legalized it show this is not true.
4. That's the point. The war on drugs cost a forgetton and doesn't reduce use.
5. Drug rehab centers already exist. Also see answer to 2

I can't see anything except increased/mandatory background checks working for gun control.

I fully, 105% do not support civilians owning automatic weapons. There's no reason for you to have them. But knowing America the United States, you'll find some stuffty way to get them anyways. forget automatic weapons.

The drug policy needs to be toned down quite a bit. Put drug users in rehabilitation centers instead of practically ending their life as they know it. Prison won't solve addictions.
I support the decriminalization of drugs for those using them, not selling them.
Marijuana should be legal for those over 21, it's less harmful than anything else legal right now.

I think the forums is being a bit xenophobic over this, a company isn't going to accept someone who doesn't have enough education in a field required for that job, that will only harm everyone involved. I think it's more towards trying to get those who are qualified on equal ground. I'm all for that.
