There was a thread like this a few months ago and there were multiple examples of good video editors, but I can't seem to be able to dig up that thread. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Not entirely wrong, just in some cases somewhat hard to find. Media-related software seems to have a habit of being bought up by large companies once it gets good enough.

wmm is as slow as forget and has way less settings than almost anything else that is free

Lightworks is what I use and one of the best free editors out there. The free version has most of the features as the Pro version - allowing multiple project exporting, overlaying various visual and text effects, etc. but is limited to exporting videos up to 720p. It does have a very steep learning curve, but is definitely worth it.

Not necessarily, Lightworks has been used for countless Hollywood movies and has even won various awards; having access to an professional editor with most of the Pro functionality included in the free version, even if limited to 720p 60+fps, isn't bad and is still an option, especially since OP didn't list any prerequisites for an editor.
