Author Topic: why is light speed the "speed limit"  (Read 1682 times)

wait i've got another question
is the universe expanding only because the light from the big bang is moving at the speed of light, and that light is the edge of the universe, and if you go past the end of the universe, theres no light, so theres nothing there?

what is the edge of the universe even made out of?
is it a particle, a wave?
what?

I don't believe the universe is expanding and I believe it is actually finite

I don't believe the universe is expanding and I believe it is actually finite
why?
wheres the evidence for that

why?
wheres the evidence for that

I said I believe it not that it is fact

no one has a clue what space is made of, it's hypothesised that it's dark matter

I said I believe it not that it is fact
but why do you believe that

why?
because moltenkitten's favorite thing to do is talk out of his butt
I said I believe it not that it is fact
see what I mean

I said I believe it not that it is fact
well i can believe that if i poop on a tuesday that i will get welfare but that doesn't mean it will happen

I don't believe the universe is expanding and I believe it is actually finite
Well you see, it is expanding. Sorry that you don't believe it, but your belief does not dictate how the universe works. Nobody knows if the entire universe is infinite or finite however, so that remains possible for now...

So in general, the reason that the speed of light is the limit is because light is always moving the same speed in every reference frame, even if you're moving 99% the speed of light, light will appear to move at the speed of light relative to you. If you were to go faster than light, then that would violate it. Universe no like violations. That's basically all of relativity in a nutshell.

There are theoretical particles that can move faster than light, but we have no evidence of their existence, and given that they would cause all sorts of paradoxes they probably don't exist.

no, omg. Space is space. Space =/= matter. Dark or otherwise.

i know that space is a vacuum cause nothing is there but what is the edge
is it just this big vacuum eating stuff up

but why do you believe that
Because I like to believe the edge of the universe is the entrance to a parrallel universe
well i can believe that if i poop on a tuesday that i will get welfare but that doesn't mean it will happen
But you could

I don't believe in god but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist

I don't believe in god but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist
stop before you start something

it's expanding into itself

humans have a hard time comprehending infinity so we always use terms that are easy to understand

because if you're going faster than light then you can't see your headlights anymore and that's dangerous because you might hit a deer
as dumb as this sounds this is the truth lol

because if you're going faster than light then you can't see your headlights anymore and that's dangerous because you might hit a deer

That actually has me thinking.

Lets say a car (or some other thing) can go faster than the speed of light, and this thing has headlights on it. First of all, yes, the lights would not be illuminating anything in front of you because you are going to fast for the particles to travel ahead of you. But would a view from the back of the car show light waves chasing the car instead of the car chasing the light waves, even though the lights are in front?
