Author Topic: Being pushed to go on disability.  (Read 1440 times)

Well you are most likely going to do it eventually, with your situation. No point in delaying.

Have you tried jesus?

Everyone asks for work history, for most jobs all it does is reduce the candidate pool because people go "oh I can't do that" when in reality you can still get the job if you're the best candidate. Having work history will help, but everyone has to start somewhere.

"Desk job" could even be more broad than I originally meant; like some places allow cashiers to sit, especially if you have a disability; as long as the register can reasonably fit a chair without interfering with working, they're required under ADA to make reasonable accommodations.

To be clear, this is a legitimate case for disability, so don't think I'm arguing against it.  It's just that disability doesn't really "pay" a whole lot, and if you can get better options, you should go for them
Disability pays just enough to help, the rest is earned by the person by having a part-time job. Or they'll pay for all of it if you are truly unable to work.
My issue with chairs is that they don't relieve much pain and some chair designs cause more pain than just standing. I'd definitely get a job if I were able, I wouldn't be able to look at myself if I were a job-dodger just to be lazy.

Jesus? What is some gardener going to do for me? Annoying Orange would deport him anyway.

Also I've decided to stop delaying and making excuses and to just go for it. Worse that happens is I'm declined (which is a slight chance)

From what you've described to me in the past, disability is a very logical road to take. Whichever road you do take though, I hope it all goes well and you can get stuff sorted out for yourself

I would really recommend taking the disability, and I hope you manage to find something you can do!

Thanks for your guys input and support. You'd think I'd be more excited at the thought of getting money while sitting on my ass but it actually does hurt a bit.

Very reasonable
I can relate OP
Getting tough for me too not as bad as you but still hard
I don't want to go on disability until I can't actually work anymore

What's got you down? I'd suggest getting some care, if possible, for it before it does drag you down

When (if) I do get disability that raises a semi-unrelated question. What to do since I can't work? Leaves me with too much time on my hands

I have a herniated disc sciatica and arthritis

And get into woodworking. It's a great hobby and can bring in some extra income

Same exact thing as me, I hope you're faring better than I am.

I'll look into it, if materials aren't too hard to get. What I might get back into is making model cars

Get disability, then get a job of some kind. Pretty sure you won't lose disability.

A word of warning, I know of a story or two where kids/people my mom has taught have been extorted by their parents for their disability money. I'm not sure of the relationship you have with your mother and her boyfriend, but it's something to consider if you still live under their roof.

dont spend all your disability check on weed doe

We're all cool towards one another. They wouldn't do something like that. Especially considering I'm a legal adult and I can simply take my money and keep it to myself.

Most of it is going towards renting a place alongside my mom and her boyfriend. We plan on going in on a home together. Then some goes into my wallet, the rest into the bank. Weed is just my painkiller to allow me to walk without damaging my body from prolonged painkiller usage

Complimentary picture of the injured disk (bottom one) compared to a good disk (top). From my understanding a dark disk is basically a dead disk. The white line on the right is the nerve its pressing on (sciatic). The report said that the herniation is sticking 1.7cm out

I feel sorry for you, just know that there will always be work even for the disabled. My professor is in a wheelchair because he's paralyzed from the waste down but that doesn't stop him from getting to his home and college everyday. Still the normal professor I've always known. Just without legs.

I'm hoping to one day get back on my feet and work so I don't have to have disability. I'm hoping this is only temporary. Until then I'll just do computer jobs at home
